Rethink Priorities: Animal Welfare Department

We combine rigorous research with strategic engagement to drive high-impact solutions for farmed and wild animals.

We predict that almost 6 trillion farmed animals—chickens, fish, shrimp, and select insects—will be slaughtered in 2033, a fourfold increase from the last decade that will likely worsen farming conditions. Meanwhile, wild animal suffering remains largely unaddressed, with crucial gaps in knowledge and interventions.

At Rethink Priorities, we identify neglected frontiers in animal welfare and develop strategic, evidence-based solutions to maximize impact. We analyze current strategies to identify critical gaps, forecast opportunities, and create actionable recommendations that bridge knowledge and action.

Through rigorous methodology and collaboration, we support nonprofits, funders, and policymakers in making cost-effective decisions. Our approach has already established new fields like invertebrate welfare, mobilized resources for high-impact work, and influenced legislation.

With your support, we can direct even more resources to solutions that improve welfare for the greatest number of animals.
