The Athens Avalon Greenspace started as an empty lot and was transformed into the beautiful space it is today thanks to the efforts of local neighbors and volunteers. The steps were designed by Iran Narges from the Excelsior neighborhood. Since 2017 the steps have been an icon in the heart of San Francisco, featured in walking tours and local news.
July 2026 there was a vandalism incident where a metal coffee table was thrown down the steps damaging about 16 of the beautiful tiles and requiring repair. The community has come together to raise money for the repair of the steps.
The Athens Avalon Greenspace has workdays once a month on the first Sunday from 10am-12pm and regular community meetings for socializing and community building.
