More Than a Meal — A Pathway to Stability

Every day, more than 400 people walk through the doors of New Journey Community Outreach. They come hungry and exhausted. Some are experiencing homelessness. Some are navigating addiction, mental health challenges, or the slow unraveling that happens when one crisis compounds into many. They come because NJCO is the place that will not turn them away.

What happens next is where our story really begins.

That first visit — for a hot meal, a change of clothes, or simply a safe place to sit — becomes a point of contact. And contact builds trust. Trust opens doors. And open doors change lives.

Who We Are

New Journey Community Outreach is a nonprofit day center and lunch program located in the heart of Reading, Pennsylvania — one of the most economically challenged cities in the United States. Since our founding, we have grown into a comprehensive, dignity-centered resource hub serving individuals and families across 31 zip codes in Berks County and beyond.

Our model is built on a simple but powerful belief: that when people feel safe, seen, and supported, they are capable of extraordinary change. We don't just meet immediate needs — we create the conditions for lasting stability.

What We Do

NJCO's integrated service model means that no matter why someone walks through our doors, they leave with more than they came in with.

Meals & Pantry Services — We served 97,000 meals in 2025 alone, a 27% increase over the prior year. Our kitchen operates M-F, providing nutritious, hot meals to everyone who comes — no questions asked, no barriers to entry. Our client choice pantry services extend that reach, helping families stretch limited resources further.

Peer Recovery Support (BRIDGES Program) — Recovery doesn't happen in isolation. Our BRIDGES program connects individuals who are unhoused or struggling with substance use to trained peer specialists with lived experience — people who have walked the same path and found a way through. Peer connection is one of the most evidence-backed tools in the recovery landscape, and BRIDGES is central to what makes NJCO more than just a lunch program.

Street Medicine Partnership — We partner with a Street Medicine team to deliver healthcare directly to those who need it most. Approximately 92 individuals per month access onsite medical support through this collaboration — people who might otherwise go without care entirely.

Code Blue Emergency Response — When temperatures drop to dangerous levels, NJCO activates. Our Code Blue program coordinates emergency warming services, hot meals, and safe refuge for individuals who would otherwise face life-threatening exposure. We have served as a critical anchor in Berks County's cold-weather emergency response network.

Wraparound Services — Our staff and volunteers connect guests to housing resources, benefits enrollment, ID recovery, employment pathways, and more. We meet people where they are and walk alongside them toward where they want to go.

Why It Matters

Poverty is not a character flaw. Homelessness is not a choice. Addiction is not a moral failure. At NJCO, we hold these truths as foundational, and they shape every interaction, every program, and every decision we make.

When someone sits down for a meal at NJCO, they are not receiving charity. They are being welcomed into a community that believes in their capacity to heal, grow, and thrive. That belief — expressed through consistent, compassionate service — is the most powerful thing we offer.

And it works. We see it every day: the person who came in for a meal and left with a housing referral. The individual who connected with a peer specialist and entered treatment. The neighbor who had lost everything and slowly, steadily, began to rebuild.

Your Impact

Every dollar given to NJCO goes directly toward sustaining and expanding the services that make these moments possible

No gift is too small. Every contribution is an investment in a real person's pathway to stability.

Join Us

We invite you to become part of something that matters deeply — not just to the individuals we serve, but to the fabric of our entire community. A city is only as strong as its most vulnerable residents, and NJCO exists to make sure no one is left behind.

One person. One meal. One connection at a time.
