The New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty (NMCLP) is dedicated to advancing economic and social justice through education, advocacy, and litigation. NMCLP works with low-income communities throughout New Mexico to improve living conditions, increase opportunities, and protect the rights of people living in poverty. NMCLP’s focus is on achieving long-term, systemic changes that advance justice and respect the dignity of all people. A team of highly-skilled attorneys and advocates collaborates directly with communities to identify the most urgent issues New Mexicans face and effective solutions that respond to their needs. They advocate on behalf of New Mexicans before state agencies and other officials, advising them of the barriers communities encounter, advancing necessary policy improvements, and providing ongoing monitoring and technical assistance following the implementation of program changes. When necessary, NMCLP provides effective legal advocacy, representing individuals and community groups in the courts through litigation in order to effectuate change. NMCLP also works to establish productive and diverse coalitions that amplify the work of direct service providers, grassroots organizers, and people building power in their communities. Finally, NMCLP delivers accurate and accessible education to the public, outlining key issues and informing people of their rights and community resources available to them. With well-developed partnerships, extensive expertise, and a powerful track record of success, NMCLP is a vital anchor institution for achieving bold systemic change in New Mexico.
