Founded in 2020 as a creative community art project, Mending Walls recieved it's non-profit status in 2023. Our mission is to leverage the power of community-engaged art to foster empathy and connection through conversations. We envision a Metro Richmond where people of all backgrounds have meaningful dialogue, embrace different perspectives, and work together to solve problems that strengthen our shared future.
Mending Walls advances Richmond and the Tri-Cities' cultural landscape by transforming art into a catalyst for authentic dialogue and relationship-building across difference. We convene residents, artists, and community partners to share lived experiences, then translate those stories into collaboratively designed public art and educational resources that remain visible, accessible, and free in public spaces. Our approach pairs artistic excellence with facilitated conversation, making art not only something to view but a tool for empathy, civic connection, and healing. We amplify local artists, elevate underrepresented voices, and activate shared spaces as enduring community assets that foster understanding across generations.
