Ladder to Learning is a grassroots organization working to amplify the learning experience in public primary schools through educational programs that complement the school curriculum in Malawi . Having served over 12,000 students since 2015, Ladder to Learning works by setting up spaces called literacy hubs in public primary schools. With literacy, creativity and leadership as targeted student outcomes, literacy hubs provide a space for students to access much needed library services, educational resources and literacy programs. Below are 5 programs that Ladder to Learning currently offers through its literacy hubs. 1. The Remedial Reading Program (RRP) : The main goal of the RRP is to contribute towards the improvement of students' academic performance by improving their English reading skills. The RRP engages volunteer teachers who help students that are struggling to read to improve their reading skills. It has served over 4,000 students since 2015. 2. Library and Clubs : This consists of educational activities that offer students access to library services and various clubs aimed at helping them thrive in school. Clubs include reading clubs, mental health clubs and animal kindness clubs. 3. Mentorship Program: This program is aimed at helping students to navigate their academic journey through one-on-one and group mentorship. It has benefitted over 50 students to-date. 4. The Digital Skills Training Program: This program aims to equip students and teachers with digital skills necessary for the 21st century. Over 200 students and 100+ teachers have been trained. 5. Motivational/Career Guidance Sessions: these sessions aim to motivate students to work hard and stay in school by giving them exposure to a variety of career paths they can pursue. Over 3,000 students have been reached.

Darcia O'Brien's Birthday Fundraiser

In October while in Malawi I had a chance to visit the unfinished Ngwenya Literacy Hub. The lack of resources and the looks on the children's faces really broke my heart. This year, I am celebrating my birthday by fundraising for resource support for Ngwenya Literacy Hub, a space that is giving access to a better education to 7,000+ students from Ngwenya 1 & 2 primary schools in Lilongwe, Malawi. Your donation will help to provide books, pencils, crayons, tables, chairs and paint for the walls at the Ngwenya Literacy Hub. There are over 7,000 students enrolled at Ngwenya 1 & 2 LEA primary schools. The 2 schools are Malawian public schools situated in the peri-urban region of Area 24 in Lilongwe. The two schools were previously one school but were split into (Ngwenya 1 and Ngwenya 2 due to the high number of students. The schools are in one compound, over populated and faced with a myriad of challenges. One prominent challenge is the lack of learning resources such as books, stationery and even desks as students learn whilst seated on the floor. A significant number of classes learn outside under trees as the number of classrooms cannot accommodate all students. Additionally, students attend classes in shifts with some students learning during morning hours and others during afternoon hours due to the limited classroom space. These challenges not only affect the academic performance of students but their overall well-being as well. In 2021, Ladder to Learning (a local education-focused grassroots organization) decided to partner with Ngwenya 1 & 2 primary schools with the aim of amplifying the learning experience of students at the school. As per their intervention approach, Ladder to Learning constructed a literacy hub at the school to provide a space where students could get access to library services, books, stationery and technological gadgets. In comparison to the 7,000+ population however, the literacy hub is to-date still very low on resources with only 2 computers, 1,329 books, 31 Chairs, 5 tables and and a few arts and crafts materials. The space needs stocking up to be more valuable to students at Ngwenya. So this year, for my birthday, I am asking you to help me in supporting students at Ngwenya in Malawi.
