Darcia O'Brien's Birthday Fundraiser
In October while in Malawi I had a chance to visit the unfinished Ngwenya Literacy Hub. The lack of resources and the looks on the children's faces really broke my heart. This year, I am celebrating my birthday by fundraising for resource support for Ngwenya Literacy Hub, a space that is giving access to a better education to 7,000+ students from Ngwenya 1 & 2 primary schools in Lilongwe, Malawi. Your donation will help to provide books, pencils, crayons, tables, chairs and paint for the walls at the Ngwenya Literacy Hub. There are over 7,000 students enrolled at Ngwenya 1 & 2 LEA primary schools. The 2 schools are Malawian public schools situated in the peri-urban region of Area 24 in Lilongwe. The two schools were previously one school but were split into (Ngwenya 1 and Ngwenya 2 due to the high number of students. The schools are in one compound, over populated and faced with a myriad of challenges. One prominent challenge is the lack of learning resources such as books, stationery and even desks as students learn whilst seated on the floor. A significant number of classes learn outside under trees as the number of classrooms cannot accommodate all students. Additionally, students attend classes in shifts with some students learning during morning hours and others during afternoon hours due to the limited classroom space. These challenges not only affect the academic performance of students but their overall well-being as well. In 2021, Ladder to Learning (a local education-focused grassroots organization) decided to partner with Ngwenya 1 & 2 primary schools with the aim of amplifying the learning experience of students at the school. As per their intervention approach, Ladder to Learning constructed a literacy hub at the school to provide a space where students could get access to library services, books, stationery and technological gadgets. In comparison to the 7,000+ population however, the literacy hub is to-date still very low on resources with only 2 computers, 1,329 books, 31 Chairs, 5 tables and and a few arts and crafts materials. The space needs stocking up to be more valuable to students at Ngwenya. So this year, for my birthday, I am asking you to help me in supporting students at Ngwenya in Malawi.
