New Orleans in 1993, IWES has worked in collaboration to co-design and implement holistic, culturally-proficient, trauma-informed approaches to sexual health, disaster response, and participatory action research to advance and improve mental health and resilience. IWES is a translational public health organization that centers community voices and needs while working in partnership with activists, people most harmed by injustice, civic leaders, institutions, government and other key stakeholders to drive and influence positive health outcomes among marginalized and oppressed populations. Key to IWES’ success over the past 30 years is the organizational creed which states: *“We believe in the power of the community to contribute to its health, well-being, and healing. We believe compassionate action opens the way for us to be in community on that journey to our collective healing and health. We believe change happens in collaboration and partnership with others who share our vision. We believe our leadership in the community is at its best when it is principled, authentic, and emphasizes the meaningful participation of community members who co-lead on decisions affecting their lives.” *Our work has fostered deep collaborations with community-based organizations around the country who embrace trauma-responsive approaches for youth, women, families in need, refugees and newcomers crossing the southern border.
