Hakuba International School is a new international boarding school (opened in 2022), located in the beautiful Hakuba Valley in the Japanese Alps. Our school is dedicated to answering the driving question: What kind of education enables people and the planet to flourish? Our focus is on personal and environmental well-being, combined with deeper learning methods to develop leaders who can solve the world’s most complex problems.

Our school community has two essential goals. First, to be a vibrant example of innovative learning methods — a "lab school" where approaches like project-based learning, social-emotional learning, and systems thinking invite a high level of student passion and engagement.

Second, to be a convening place for the education field, where educators can see innovative learning in action, and enjoy the peaceful natural location of Hakuba to reflect on and learn new methods. We host an annual conference of education leaders, called the Hakuba Forum, and offer several training programs for teachers.

In this way, we hope to be of service both to our students and to the education world more broadly, helping raise more young people who have the skills and insights to guide our world toward flourishing.
