Four Winds Connections, in collaboration with the Community Action Center, operates the Northfield Pet Food Shelf initiative in southern Minnesota. Studies have shown that sharing a life with a companion animal improves mental health, reduces stress and enhances well-being as well as encourages children’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. The Pet Food Shelf is designed to address a significant need in the Northfield community — ensuring that low-income families who wish to have a companion animal are supported in doing so. Raising the necessary funds to run this program will help bridge the gap, allowing more Northfield families to enjoy the benefits of a family pet through food support when finances are tight.

Four Winds Connections got a call from a tribal partner Rick Haaland about a dog in Leech Lake who had his leg caught in a cable (for a while) and as a result needed an amputation. The partner in Leech Lake transferred the dog, now named Fox, to the care of our good friend and tribal partner, Li Boyd in Mille Lacs of Anishinaabe and Awesiinyag. Four Winds Connections worked together with one of our trusted partners, The Bond Between, to explore veterinary options to find a clinic and surgeon that could take Fox in ASAP. The wound was so deep it had reached his bones and we were all concerned of infection (we are choosing NOT to share those photos!). His wound was life threatening and if left untreated he would have died. Thanks to Li for taking him in and tending to his wound by honey wrapping his leg -- her doing this over the weekend saved his life AND gave us the time to find a vet able to perform the amputation. Fox's leg was amputated today (Tuesday, 8/20) and he is currently healing and recovering at the vet clinic and will be picked up tomorrow where he will return to the care of Li of Anishinaabe and Awesiinyag until he is well enough to be transferred to a foster with The Bond Between, and will then be placed up for adoption. Fox is cute as a button and super sweet with all living things. He deserves the best life! We acted from our heart ... yes, as we simply could not say NO to our tribal partners and we could not let this sweet boy continue to suffer. We are grateful for everyone who helped .. a special thanks to Dr. Raye Taylor for all her guidance and support as well. The cost for Fox's veterinary care and surgery is $3,000. We need your help. Please consider making a donation. If you aren't able to donate, please share.
