Since 1843, the Foundation Asile des aveugles has been providing medical treatment and support to visually-impaired people, from childhood to old age. We also conduct scientific research to reduce blindness around the world. In 1843, Elisabeth Jane de Cerjat, threatened with blindness and successfully operated on for cataracts, Dr. Frédéric Recordon, an ophthalmologist, and William Haldimand, a retired English banker turned philanthropist, joined forces to build a hospital that would provide not only medical care, but also educational and professional training to young blind and visually-impaired people in order to enable them to lead an independent life. Today, our more than 650 employees work each day to advance visual health. We pursue the missions set forth by our founders by providing an integrated approach to vision health and conducting research in collaboration with institutions from around the world. As a world-class institution in the field of visual health, the Foundation Asile des aveugles provides medical treatment and support to visually-impaired people, from childhood to old age. Thanks to our commitment and with the support of our donors, we are able to carry out our missions which include: - providing leading-edge medical treatment of eye diseases, thanks to innovative treatments and new surgical techniques; - conducting research in ophthalmology with real-life impact ; - accompanying and empowering visually-impaired people of all ages ; - ensuring access to quality eye care for all.
