Family Empowerment Media is a 501(c)(3) charity that develops and implements radio-based social and behavior change family planning campaigns, an evidence-based and
impactful intervention to reduce information gaps increase uptake in contraceptive use and thus reduce unintended pregnancies and contribute towards reduced maternal deaths, and and increase maternal and child health outcomes.
FEM’s mission is to eliminate maternal deaths and other health burdens from unintended pregnancies. It works with local partners in Nigeria to produce and broadcast radio programming that shifts knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors around family planning. Its model is simple, evidence-backed, and transferable to many regions in Nigeria and other African countries.
FEM produces cost-effective, culturally sensitive and stakeholder-approved radio campaign material in the form of serial dramas and radio ads.
Currently, FEM is scaling its evidence-driven family planning radio campaigns across cost-effective intervention regions in Nigeria. The organization aims to reach 30 million listeners by 2027. FEM has recently formed three new implementing partnerships in Anambra, Ondo and Kogi State. They have developed relationships with key stakeholders in the regions, conducted listener research, and will soon be airing proof-of-concept campaigns. FEM is also reaching 5.5 million listeners through a nine-month long campaign in Kano State.
In addition, in partnership with AIDE and a top AI research institute, they are building a solution to answer follow-up questions to their campaigns with an AI based WhatsApp service.
