Parent-Led Education will Transform Society
We are pioneers of the "Parent-as-Educator" movement. Dekalb Christian Home Educator is a Georgia-based, parent-led homeschool cooperative serving underserved and under-resourced families. Our mission is to serve the entire home educating community. We equip parents as educators & advocates by providing training opportunties; encourage families to cultivate community for academic accountability and emotional support, energize an ecosystem of resources by partnering with families, advocacy organizations, churches, academia, and school programs for equitable access; and empower families as a societal transformer by producing a generation of critical-thinking community builders. In 1989, Dekalb Christian Home Educators started as a parent-facilated meet-up with extracurricular clubs, field trips, and parent support groups. Post-pandemic, the cooperative has adapted to community needs by becoming a resource center that more attuned to desire for affordable, in-person engagement. Our annual community-wide survey led to the launch new experiential learning opportunities with 4-H, creation of a competitive reading bowl team, access to affordable physical education with the Atlatna Track Club, and new programming pathways like financial literarcy, private amd group music instruction, on-site dual enrollment, and advocacy for educational freedom to ensure fair college admissions for homeschooled students. In 2022, DCHE started the Georgia Black Home Education Network (GBHEN) to showcase the educational possibilities of homeschooling to Black families. This event aims to expand the ecosystem by encouraging veteran homeschooling parents and former teachers to offer services.
