The Clooney Foundation for Justice UK (CFJ UK) wages justice by providing free legal aid in defense of free speech and women’s rights in over 40 countries. Its work has led to dozens of journalists being set free released from detention and thousands of women receiving free legal support to defend their rights.
Our TrialWatch initiative, launched in 2019, provides free legal aid to journalists who are unfairly imprisoned to secure their release and uphold freedom of speech. It is the first initiative that monitors criminal trials globally, exposing unfair trials and challenging laws that are weaponized against free speech. The initiative has freed or secured reduced charges for dozens of journalists and advocates facing sham charges and unjust prison sentences.
The Waging Justice for Women initiative, launched in 2022, provides free legal aid to women and girls to defend their rights, including their right to be free from child marriage, violence and discrimination. With our partners across Africa, we operate legal aid clinics to provide free legal support to women, challenge unjust laws through the courts, and mentor the next generation of justice champions through an annual fellowship for young women lawyers. In its first two years, WJW has provided free legal advice to more than 9,000 women and children and represented women for free in hundreds of cases in court.
Most recently, CFJ has partnered with Oxford University's Blavatnik School of Government to launch the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice, the first global initiative dedicated to harnessing the power of AI for justice. As the Institute's implementing partner, CFJ will develop innovative digital tools that will scale its existing programs and enhance access to justice for journalists and women and girls.
The Clooney Foundation for Justice is a registered charity in England and Wales under charity number 1213791.
