Our work focuses exclusively on truly important stories, stories with “moral force.” We do this by producing journalism that shines a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them.  Investigative journalism is at risk. Many news organizations have increasingly come to see it as a luxury. Today’s investigative reporters lack resources: Time and budget constraints are curbing the ability of journalists not specifically designated “investigative” to do this kind of reporting in addition to their regular beats. New models are, therefore, necessary to carry forward some of the great work of journalism in the public interest that is such an integral part of self-government, and thus an important bulwark of our democracy.

The Freedom of the Press Foundation is built on the recognition that this kind of transparency journalism — from publishing the Pentagon Papers and exposing Watergate, to uncovering the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping program and CIA secret prisons — doesn’t just happen. It requires dogged work by journalists, and often, the courage of whistleblowers and others who work to ensure that the public actually learns what it has a right to know.  But in a changing economic and technological age, media organizations are increasingly susceptible to corporate or government pressure. This can lead to watered-down or compromised coverage, or worse: censorship.  Increasingly, non-profit media and transparency organizations are emerging as a critical component of the journalism landscape. Leveraging the power of the Internet, these organizations are helping to reinvent and reimagine independent watchdog reporting.  Right now, too many of those organizations are struggling for funding, relying on a few large foundations or competing for donors. Our goal is to broaden the financial base of these types of institutions—both start-ups and established non-profit organizations — by crowd-sourcing funding and making it easy for people to support the best journalism from an array of organizations all in one place. Publishing
The Stanford Daily publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year and maintains a circulation of 4,000 to more than 200 locations on and around the main Stanford main campus. The Daily publishes several special issues every year, including a New Student Orientation issue, a Big Game issue and a Commencement issue.

History of The Daily
The Stanford Daily is the independent, student-run newspaper of Stanford University. The Daily was originally founded as a small pamphlet known as The Daily Palo Alto in 1892 and has been a campus fixture ever since. The Daily strives to serve the Stanford community with relevant, unbiased journalism and provides its editorial, tech and business staffs with unparalleled educational opportunities.

The Daily became independent of Stanford University in 1973 after a years-long clash with the administration spurred in part by disagreements over The Daily’s coverage of anti-Vietnam War protests. In particular, a strongly worded 1970 op-ed in the newspaper entitled “Snitches and Oppression,” penned by Diarmuid McGuire M.A. ’73, drew concerns from University administrators that the school might be held liable for any violence incited by the article. Independence for The Daily was thus a logical conclusion for both sides: The Daily’s disentanglement from the University would make it impossible for the University to attempt to influence reporting through financial withholding or other means, and the University’s disentanglement from The Daily would release it of any potential liability for content published in the newspaper. Thus, in 1973, The Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation was incorporated in Santa Clara County as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Independence wasn’t the only consequence of The Daily’s coverage of campus antiwar protests; the publication also drew national attention when it sued James Zurcher, the chief of the Palo Alto Police Department, following a surprise search of The Daily’s offices for photographic evidence of protestors that the student-journalists and legal counsel deemed to be in violation of the First and Fourth Amendments. After a district court and court of appeals ruled in favor of The Daily, the case, Zurcher v. Stanford Daily, was brought to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1978, with the nation’s highest court ruling 5-3 in favor of Zurcher. The ensuing outcry among journalists and the public led to Congress’s passage of the Privacy Protection Act of 1980, which established the requirement of a subpoena to search newsrooms for unpublished materials.

With the launch of its website in 1995, The Daily became one of the first college newspapers publishing on the Internet. The site is live and continuously updated throughout the year. It features content from the print edition, along with special Web-only content often including live blogs of sporting events and major campus events.

The Daily moved out of its old offices in the Storke Publications Building to its new home at the Lorry I. Lokey Stanford Daily Building in 2007, thanks to the generosity of Lorry I. Lokey ’49 and hundreds of other benefactors, which would not have been possible without the titanic effort of Arthur Charles Hoffman ’73 MBA ’76.

We believe cartoonists occupy a unique role requiring specialised campaigning and defence.

Cartoonists are among those on the front lines of free speech. We monitor and verify threats in order to provide direct support to those who need it most. 

Our approach is always about the person – we do not distinguish on the basis of career level, fame or reputation, preferred format, platform or methodology.

Our client base ranges from internationally celebrated cartoonists to newcomers persecuted simply for putting a drawing on their social media.

Collaborative working is at the core of what CRNI does. We work with cartoonists’ organisations as well as human rights and freedom of expression NGOs all over the world.

We seek to form lasting relationships with cartoonists and gather support from the wider global community.

We are the only cartoonists' FOE organisation with an explicit human rights-based remit.

We are neither a publishing platform nor an education/pedagogy organisation. We put cartoonists, the people, before cartoons, the artwork, and therefore are more vociferous in our defensive posture than others with a "softer" mission.

Nor are we concerned with what might be termed professional rights, which separates us from existing associations, unions etcetera.

Global Girl Media trains young BIPOC women to stand behind the camera and at the center of the story.

You can’t be what you can’t see. Our media tells us a lot about who we are and the stories we believe about ourselves. Yet, a female POV is under-published, under-broadcast and under-streamed compared to a male POV. Now more than ever, women and girls of color need a place at the table to change the narrative.

We change the storytellers so they can change the world.

Global Girl Media empowers young women to bring their often-overlooked perspectives onto the global media stage. By turning up the volume of girls’ voices globally, GGM promotes freedom of expression and strengthens substantive journalism that addresses historically marginalized voices. We do this while also building self-esteem, leadership capacity, and 21st century skills. Founded in 2010, we are currently active in South Africa, Kosovo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Greece, London and the Bay Area.

GGM believes training young women of color in digital media journalism is important to developing strong, healthy communities. For youth, particularly young women, education and self expression are key to changing the entrenched stereotypes and values that hold them back and keep them from succeeding in the fields of media and technology. GGM intentionally works exclusively with girls to provide a safe, nurturing environment where they can lead, speak their minds, and learn how to close the gender/technology divide.

GGM partners with schools, after-school programs, other NGO’s, and community centers to select girls for our programs and help sustain their work. In addition to four-week summer trainings, Global Girls participate in year-long mentorships with leading journalists, filmmakers, and new media mavericks. In this way, we provide both short-term and long-term support to low-income, marginalized girls around the world.

The Human Rights Foundation promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies.

HRF is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights and democracy globally. HRF works to promote freedom where it’s most at risk: in countries ruled by authoritarian regimes. 

We do this in three main ways: by supporting grassroots activists and providing them the resources, skills, and attention to make a difference in their countries; by popularizing the struggle for freedom and against dictatorship and bringing human rights into the mainstream of global public discussion; and by producing international legal reports, public letters, and op-eds that can influence institutions, policymakers, and the public in the direction of protecting individual rights in countries ruled by authoritarian regimes.

HRF promotes liberal democracy in countries ruled by authoritarian regimes. Liberal democratic values are best expressed through the rights outlined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which is ratified by 173 countries and includes every human being’s…

Started by Lexington residents in 2021, the Lexington Observer is a new nonprofit digital newsroom devoted to reporting on Lexington—from serious investigative reporting to ‘explainers’. Our goal is to be a part of civic life in Lexington, joining community organizations including LexMedia.org and publications like the Lexington Times and the Lexington Minuteman. We hope to increase both understanding and participation in our community.

Beyond our one paid reporter, we are an all-volunteer crew with experience in newsrooms, running non-profits, and living and working in Lexington. We’re raising money to hire—at a minimum—one more full-time reporter, and hopefully more. We’ll manage and direct LexObserver with transparency so the community can see how decisions are made.

The Association for Quality Journalism was established on April 30, 2011, is an independent, nonprofit organization with a mission of promoting civic awareness and improving the media environment. The main tasks of the association are advancing the development of citizen media, empowering citizen journalists, rewarding high quality in-depth reporting, enhancing research on civil society, and organizing various activities in line with its mission statement.

In order to promote its mission, core concepts, and innovative practices, the association publishes books on relevant themes every year. Examples include “The Era of a Public Commission for Journalism is Coming: the Meaning and Prospects of weReport,” “The Rise and Revelations of Data Journalism,” “Social Media and Journalism,” “The Relativism of Entrepreneurial Journalism,” “Local Revolution: New Wave of Taiwan Community Media.” All the books are extremely well-received and valued by the communication and education communities.

JDN operates the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), an award-winning, non-profit investigative news organization and innovator in investigative reporting. OCCRP reports on organized crime and corruption with more than 20 international partners.

JDN has helped start or used as a model by more than a dozen investigative reporting organizations around the world including the Centar za istrazivacko novinarstvo in Sarajevo (CIN), the Centar za istrazivacko novinarstvo in Serbia (CINS) and the RISE Project in Bucharest among others.

JDN's projects have won dozens of awards internationally including the Global Shining Light (3 times), the Online Journalism Award (twice), the Tom Renner Award for Crime Reporting (3 times), and the Daniel Pearl Award (twice) along with many others.

World Press Photos mission is to connect the world to the stories that matter. The foundation aims to foster, support and promote photojournalism and visual storytelling worldwide. The foundation seeks to achieve its purpose by, among other things:

a) Providing a global platform for professional photojournalism and visual storytelling;

b) collaborating and partnering with qualified and relevant individuals and organizations around the world;

c) organizing international competitions, developing projects, curating and organizing exhibitions, festivals, meetings, outreach programs and talent programs;

d) providing educational programs, including masterclasses, seminars and symposia;

e) analyzing and exploring how developments in media and technology are changing journalism and storytelling; and

f) producing publications, both online and in print, in the field of visual journalism and storytelling, all in the broadest sense.



Typical expenditures would be costs regarding the Winners Festival, exhibition production costs and acquisition costs.



Historically, our activities have broadly been the same as our current activities.

The activities our organization is planning in the coming years align with the activities we have historically performed. We will continue to organize an annual photography competition, awarding the best photojournalism and documentary photography. We will continue to organize exhibitions and educational programs (in the form of masterclasses and portfolio reviews for professional photographers, but also mentorship programs for youth). We will also implement our Press Freedom Strategy, including safety trainings and an Emergency Fund for photojournalists working in high risk areas. We will also develop our visual literacy strategy, in the form of accessible online resources that can be used by the general public, as well as in educational institutions, to help people improve their understanding of the images they see.

YOU CAN HELP US HELP TEACHERS — Our  Press Freedom Teacher Award teacher laureates  do exemplary work throughout the globe helping their students learn why good journalism is necessary and about the threats to those who do that job. You can help us support them and show others how to emulate this important work. Why is it critical to do that? Because most media literacy work skips that part.

2. YOU CAN HELP US HELP JOURNALISM  FOR CHILDREN — We help editors of news for children and those who want to do that work. We have done two webinars  for beginners about how to get started in doing journalism for children and the lessons from that work for those who do news for the rest of us. When the war Ukraine began, we worked with children's news outlets in a multifaceted  #KidsDrawPeace4Ukraine  project that will last as long as it's needed. In our latest project,  #HowToSaveOurPlanetStep1  we want to get the demands those editors gathered about climate solutions to decision makers, partly to remind those leaders for whom they are really working.  

3. YOU CAN HELP US AMPLIFY TEENAGE JOURNALISM — Our first  World Teenage Reporting Project showcased the largely ignored stories of how teenagers where helping during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's  Climate Champion Profiles Challenge  celebrated and rewarded teenagers (thanks to our partners) who revealed heroes who are helping save the Earth. 

4. YOU CAN HELP US GET THE WORD OUT — We curate and put into context transferable intelligence from around the world about smart ways news media are engaging youth. Our first page of resources focuses on compelling ways to help students learn about the  threats to journalists.  We aim to do a multi-part report that the other ways news media contribute meaningfully to media literacy while building support for journalism itself.

The San Antonio Heron, founded in 2018, is a nonprofit newsroom reporting on development and its impact on inner city communities.

The Heron launched in June 2018 with the purpose of chronicling downtown San Antonio development and its impact on abutting neighborhoods

We are dedicated to producing thoroughly-reported and clearly-written stories. Our goal for every story is to gather all the facts and opinions and present them in an objective way so the reader decides on their own how they feel about the issue.

Through meaty analysis and deep dives, we strive to answer the following questions: How and why is downtown San Antonio changing? What’s the impact on nearby communities, especially vulnerable ones? Who’s benefitting and who’s not from the growth? How does San Antonio grow as a city while maintaining its unique culture?

Our second objective is the “how?” We aim to raise the standard for journalism in San Antonio by embracing a reader-first philosophy, while obsessing over objectivity and fairness. Our third goal is to create an internship program for San Antonio students who may want to pursue writing and photography. We’d like to create a pipeline of local talent so local kids can serve their communities through storytelling.

Simply put, we exist to inform our readers. That is our only obligation. We do not produce our journalism for personal gain, for awards, nor for vanity.

Chapter Four Uganda is an independent a non-profit organisation working to defend civil liberties and promote human rights for all. 

Established in 2013, the organisation works in the courts, legislature and communities to provide bold and innovative legal response through strategic and public interest litigation, first line legal representation, human rights research and documentation, legislative and strategic advocacy, and general counsel support. We work with human rights defenders, pro-democracy actors and civil society organisations - with keen focus on the most vulnerable, underrepresented, and discriminated sections of the society. 

Over the past decade, Chapter Four has grown into a dependable source of integrity, purposeful public interest, and an impartial advocate for justice for all no matter their world view, social, political leaning, or sexual orientation/gender identity.

Founded in Vancouver, WA in June 2011, Autism Empowerment is a positive and passionate grassroots organization serving neurodivergent individuals and families throughout Washington in a variety of innovative and impactive ways. 

This is our 12th year and so we decided to set a fundraising goal of 12,000 to start and then when we hit that, our next goal will be $20,000! We have started with $6,000 in matching funds and we appreciate partnering with you in both achieving and exceeding our goal!

Everyone on our Board of Directors and in key leadership roles either identifies as on the autism spectrum or has autistic family members. Autism intersects all races, ethnicities, genders and identities. It is estimated that 2% of Washington residents are on the autism spectrum.

In a world where people impacted by autism have a tendency to feel isolated and alone, Autism Empowerment provides a beacon of light and hope through relatable, thought-provoking and meaningful content that encourages the community to come together respectfully and learn from one another. Civil Rights Defenders works for and together with human rights defenders fighting for democracy and civil and political rights across the world. Our task is to make sure that they can work smarter, faster, and safer. Through advocacy, litigation, and public campaigns, we defend human rights. We also act as Sweden’s civil rights watchdog. We Are Finesse; was founded in May 2019 by a millennial suicide attempt survivor.

 We Are Finesse; exists to revolutionize one of the defining issues of our generation: the concerning global suicide, self-harm, and mental health crisis in young individuals evolving in the midst of today’s culture. WAF; is keen on de-stigmatizing conversations around these topics by being there and actually talking about it! 

 **Our Vision:**
WAF; will reduce the rates of suicide and self-harm while improving the mental health outcomes of young people worldwide by creating innovative technology and practical resources to close the treatment gap between those in need of care and those who can provide it. We will increase suicide/self-harm/mental health education normalcy, awareness, and prevention to ensure everyone considers it a priority in today’s world. We aim to empower young people to revolutionize suicide, self-harm, and mental health globally by being their own advocates in their respective communities.
