Providing NYC Public Schools with Training and Resources to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs and Publications

Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced NYC public schools with free faculty training, student resources and program support to launch or revive a student news publication – and keep it running. Our goal is to level the playing field in a city where a 2022 Baruch College study found 93 of the 100 highest poverty high schools had no student newspaper. Working on a news team gives teens the opportunity to develop their curiosity and passion by writing about topics that interest them, developing critical thinking, teamwork and leadership along with media literacy.

Since 2021, we’ve helped 30 NYC public schools start or revive a student news publication, online or in print, with 14 more coming in the 2025-26 school year. Every donation goes toward supporting these budding news teams through fellowships for teachers and students.

For example:

- $250 funds a stipend for a Student Journalism Leader
- $500 funds an hands-on journalism workshop for students
- $1000 funds a Journalism Adviser Fellow's first year stipend 
- $2000 funds one year of journalism supplies and resources for a student news team                                              
- $25,000 fully funds three-years of program support for a school news team to ensure sustainability.

The Kyiv Independent is an award-winning English-language media outlet covering Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

The Kyiv Independent is **Ukraine’s fastest-growing English-language media outlet**, established in November 2021, just three months before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Kyiv Independent was born out of a **fight for freedom of speech**. It was co-founded by a group of journalists who were fired from the Kyiv Post, then a prominent newspaper, as the owner attempted to take the newsroom under control and end its critical coverage of Ukrainian authorities.

Just three months after the Kyiv Independent was launched, Russia invaded Ukraine. **Our team stayed in Ukraine and kept on reporting on what was now a war against their country.**

The team’s resilience and **uncompromising reporting quickly made the Kyiv Independent a key source of news** from Ukraine for millions of people around the world.

**We vowed to serve the principles of honest journalism even during an ongoing war**. We have published investigations, including into misconduct within the Ukrainian military. It has solidified our readers’ trust in us as an independent news source. The Kyiv Independent has won multiple awards for its work.

We had to grow fast. Today, **the Kyiv Independent is a dynamic organization** producing stories, video reports, newsletters, documentaries, and more. In March 2023, we formed a separate unit within the team to investigate Russian war crimes. The team has **published nine documentaries so far, uncovered multiple war crimes, and seven international awards** for its work. 

**Unlike many news organizations, the Kyiv Independent has no single owner** or external source of financing. Instead, the majority of our funding comes directly from our readers — most of whom give just $5 a month. In 2024, 70% of our revenue was from membership and donations. 

Thanks to the support of our readers, the Kyiv Independent doesn’t need to depend on a wealthy owner — and doesn’t have a paywall. Our journalism is free and accessible to everyone, regardless of ability to pay, because we believe that everyone should have access to accurate and reliable information.

3. **We have published more than 150 field reports**, including dozens of stories from the front lines, bringing you on-the-ground coverage from places like Avdiivka, Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, and Vovchansk.
4. **We have conducted 30 investigations**, including an award-winning investigation into alleged misconduct in Ukraine’s International Legion and leaked documents showing Russia’s plan to take over Belarus by 2030.
5. **The Kyiv Independent currently has seven active newsletters with over 230,000 subscribers**. They cover the latest events in Ukraine, front-line dispatches, business news, and much more.
6. **We built a vibrant, global community of more than 20,000 members**.  Since its launch, more than 50,000 people have financially supported the Kyiv Independent.

KRIK, founded in 2015, investigates high-level corruption and ties between organized crime and officials in Serbia and the Balkans

KRIK is an investigative media outlet founded by a group of investigative journalists from Serbia in mid-2015. The portal publishes investigative stories about high-level corruption in Serbia, focusing on suspicious and corrupt dealings involving individuals in key positions of power or those who wield significant influence, as well as the connections between organized crime and government officials. In addition, through its daily content, KRIK informs readers about events and issues of public interest and reports on the most important court proceedings in the country.

Over the years, KRIK has launched several specialized platforms: it initiated RasKRIKavanje, a site dedicated to exposing media manipulation and fake news; published a database of politicians’ assets, which includes information on the wealth and income of both ruling and opposition officials; and created “Judge Who Judges”, a database profiling judges involved in the country’s most significant cases. Amidst the raging gang wars in Serbia and the region, KRIK also released the “Black Book” – a record of mafia-style killings – and “Underworld Bosses”, profiling the leading figures of rival criminal clans.

As a member of the global investigative journalism network Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), KRIK has participated in numerous international investigations such as the Panama Papers, Paradise Papers, Suisse Secrets, Pandora Papers, OpenLux, and Crime Telegram (an investigation into the “Sky” company and encrypted phones). Besides OCCRP, KRIK is a member of several other media organizations, including the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN), Association of Online Media (AOM), International Press Institute (IPI), International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN).

KRIK’s newsroom and its journalists have received numerous international and domestic journalism awards, such as the Data Journalism Award, Sigma Award, CEI SEEMO Award for Outstanding Merits in Investigative Journalism, Anti-Corruption Champions Award, Global Shining Light Award, European Press Prize, and national honors for ethics and courage like the “Dušan Bogavac” and “Jug Grizelj” awards, as well as regional accolades such as “Srđan Aleksić” and “Duško Jovanović”. **The problem**

In many places in today’s world, writers face persecution for the statements they make in their art. Every writer who is silenced means one less voice to speak for thousands more against oppression.
 
**Our approach**

ICOA hosts one writer at a time (plus family members) for a two-year residence in partnership with a local institution of higher learning. Currently, our artist serves as a Visiting Affiliate Artist at Ithaca College. Cornell University has hosted past writers and currently provides substantial financial sponsorship. 

Our visiting writers teach, share their work through public events, and form alliances with local organizations. The resident benefits from a place to live, time to write, financial support, and community. Ithaca gains the perspective, friendship, and artistry of each visiting resident.

Long before we knew that it would be called Signal, we knew what we wanted it to be. Instead of teaching the rest of the world cryptography, we wanted to see if we could develop cryptography that worked for the rest of the world. At the time, the industry consensus was largely that encryption and cryptography would remain unusable, but we started Signal with the idea that private communication could be simple.

Since then, we’ve made some progress. We’ve built a service used by millions, and software used by billions. The stories that make it back to us and keep us going are the stories of people discovering each other in moments where they found they could speak freely over Signal, of people falling in love over Signal, of people organizing ambitious plans over Signal. When we ask friends who at their workplace is on Signal and they respond “every C-level executive, and the kitchen staff.” When we receive a subpoena for user data and have nothing to send back but a blank sheet of paper. When we catch that glimpse of “Signal blue” on a metro commuter’s phone and smile.

However, we’ve always wanted to do much more, and our limitations have often been challenging. Over the lifetime of the project, there have only been an average of 2.3 full-time software developers, and the entire Signal team has never been more than 7 people. With three client platforms to develop, a service to build and run, a growing list of integrations to assist with, and millions of users to support, that has often left us wanting.

Even so, Signal has never taken VC funding or sought investment, because we felt that putting profit first would be incompatible with building a sustainable project that put users first. As a consequence, Signal has sometimes suffered from our lack of resources or capacity in the short term, but we’ve always felt those values would lead to the best possible experience in the long term. Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit advocacy organization and legal service provider. 

S.T.O.P. litigates and advocates for privacy, working to abolish local governments’ systems of mass surveillance. The Psst... mission is to make it much easier and safer to hold power to account from within by pairing mechanisms for safe reporting with the power and safety of the collective.

The concept of whistleblowing is sacrosanct in democratic societies. But today the act of whistleblowing is both less effective as a means of checking power and more precarious for the individual who comes forward. We as a society must re-think and re-engineer whistleblowing to keep up with a world where society's power brokers in Silicon Valley and Washington, DC face little to no oversight and wield dangerous weapons against individual whistleblowers and journalists.

Psst… addresses the threat to whistleblowing by shifting it from an individual pursuit to ***collective action***. Collective action diffuses the risks associated with whistleblowing while also increasing the impact of disclosures.

The mechanism for doing so is the Psst Safe, a secure repository where insiders can record their concerns, whether big or small, in a repository while protecting their identities. Individual deposits in the repository are vetted for authenticity and analyzed to uncover patterns among deposits. Patterns are used to create complete stories and/or legal cases; depositors are given the option to be part of the collective, always with legal and safety measures in place.

The Friends of Bangladesh works to protect human rights and democracy in Bangladesh.


In early August 2024, opposition to an autocratic regime in Bangladesh grew to the point where the government collapsed, and the now former Prime Minister fled the country. Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was then appointed Chief Adviser to lead an Interim Government. In response to this changing landscape, what had been the Protect Yunus Campaign transformed into what is now called ["Friends of Bangladesh,"](https://www.thefriendsofbangladesh.com/) which is supporting positive outcomes in the world's eighth most populous country during this critical interim period. In so doing, we seek to advance the well-being of the people of Bangladesh. 

Friends of Bangladesh needs additional funding to continue its activities in five areas:

1. Provide timely analysis of the evolving situation in Bangladesh through our website, [blog](https://www.thefriendsofbangladesh.com/blog/), webinars, and active social media channels (in part to combat disinformation circulating online about the current situation in the country).
2. Promote harmonious relations between Bangladesh and neighboring countries that have the ability to influence events there through strategic communications, online and in-person convenings, and effectively coordinating with allies and friends of Bangladesh.
3. Engage in a proactive media relations strategy, including the placement of op-eds and ensuring unbiased and fact-based coverage by influential regional media outlets that shape public opinion in the region and beyond.
4. Inform, mobilize, and grow the network of allies of Bangladesh around the world, including members of the Bangladeshi diaspora and others interested in seizing this historic moment for the nation to thrive.
5. Support the efforts of [a private foundation](https://jssfbd.com/) set up by Professor Yunus to ensure appropriate assistance to an estimated 20,000 students and others who were injured during the July/August uprising by police and paramilitaries, and also to compensate the families of the 1,400 who were killed. The government has allocated $8.3 million to this foundation but that amount is nearly 100% expended, and the foundation is seeking private donations to support future activities and victim compensation. Hong Kong Watch defends human rights, freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Watch is a [UK registered charity](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?regid=1180013&subid=0) founded in 2017, consisting of Hong Kongers and friends of Hong Kong, working closely with Hong Kong community groups in the diaspora.

We inform and educate legislators, policy-makers and the media, and raise awareness among the wider public, about the violations of human rights, basic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and advocate for actions to assist Hong Kongers. We do this through a combination of in-depth research reports, regular topical briefings, opinion editorials, media briefings and interviews, and advocacy campaigns.

We conceived of The Battleground on Armistice Day 2018, one hundred years after the end of the First World War. We named it The Battleground to reflect the battle for human rights, the rule of law, and fundamental freedoms.

This ambition did not emerge in a vacuum. Since the 2008 financial crisis, Europe has been repeatedly destabilised by conflicts on its eastern periphery, terrorism, refugees, and the far right. Most of the media we’d worked for failed to cover this. The Battleground was our answer.

Our decision has proved correct given the events of the six years since our founding. The Battleground is the only progressive English-language media in the European Union that tackles such topics, and we have a growing global audience to show for it. By December 2025, our readership will reach 700,000, with almost half located in North America.

Given the far-right political drift in Europe and beyond, staying the course and remaining a voice of reason and tolerance has inspired us like no other project we’ve worked on. Our growth has inspired us to take chances and exceed our expectations.

The Battleground has published over a thousand feature articles and twelve hundred original photos, six eBooks, and six full-length field recording albums for our  [Battleground Books](https://thebattleground.eu/book/) and  [Battleground Sounds](https://thebattleground.eu/sound/) imprints.

Our editors publish regular reviews of books, film and music and politics features, and conduct candid conversations about ideas and events on our Left To Burn podcast. They’re an inspired bunch at the height of their journalistic careers.

The majority of our audience is between 18 and 44. We are heavily read by our peers, journalists, and other EU media, who increasingly follow our lead. We’re regarded as a publisher’s publisher in the Brussels media bubble.

Freedom of the Press Foundation protects, defends, and empowers public-interest journalism in the 21st century.

The Freedom of the Press Foundation is built on the recognition that this kind of transparency journalism — from publishing the Pentagon Papers and exposing Watergate, to uncovering the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping program and CIA secret prisons — doesn’t just happen. It requires dogged work by journalists, and often, the courage of whistleblowers and others who work to ensure that the public actually learns what it has a right to know.  But in a changing economic and technological age, media organizations are increasingly susceptible to corporate or government pressure. This can lead to watered-down or compromised coverage, or worse: censorship.  Increasingly, non-profit media and transparency organizations are emerging as a critical component of the journalism landscape. Leveraging the power of the Internet, these organizations are helping to reinvent and reimagine independent watchdog reporting.  Right now, too many of those organizations are struggling for funding, relying on a few large foundations or competing for donors. Our goal is to broaden the financial base of these types of institutions—both start-ups and established non-profit organizations — by crowd-sourcing funding and making it easy for people to support the best journalism from an array of organizations all in one place.  Using the same networked, collaborative approach, the Freedom of the Press Foundation will also provide support for organizations and individuals that have been unjustly censored or cut off from funding for doing their job as journalists. Given the variety of corporate and government pressures on journalism outlets around the world, the need has never been greater.

The Stanford Daily newspaper is the primary holding of The Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation. Founded in 1973, The Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation operates as a California non-profit corporation headed by the paper’s editor-in-chief and business manager.

Publishing
The Stanford Daily publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year and maintains a circulation of 4,000 to more than 200 locations on and around the main Stanford main campus. The Daily publishes several special issues every year, including a New Student Orientation issue, a Big Game issue and a Commencement issue.

History of The Daily
The Stanford Daily is the independent, student-run newspaper of Stanford University. The Daily was originally founded as a small pamphlet known as The Daily Palo Alto in 1892 and has been a campus fixture ever since. The Daily strives to serve the Stanford community with relevant, unbiased journalism and provides its editorial, tech and business staffs with unparalleled educational opportunities.

The Daily became independent of Stanford University in 1973 after a years-long clash with the administration spurred in part by disagreements over The Daily’s coverage of anti-Vietnam War protests. In particular, a strongly worded 1970 op-ed in the newspaper entitled “Snitches and Oppression,” penned by Diarmuid McGuire M.A. ’73, drew concerns from University administrators that the school might be held liable for any violence incited by the article. Independence for The Daily was thus a logical conclusion for both sides: The Daily’s disentanglement from the University would make it impossible for the University to attempt to influence reporting through financial withholding or other means, and the University’s disentanglement from The Daily would release it of any potential liability for content published in the newspaper. Thus, in 1973, The Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation was incorporated in Santa Clara County as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Independence wasn’t the only consequence of The Daily’s coverage of campus antiwar protests; the publication also drew national attention when it sued James Zurcher, the chief of the Palo Alto Police Department, following a surprise search of The Daily’s offices for photographic evidence of protestors that the student-journalists and legal counsel deemed to be in violation of the First and Fourth Amendments. After a district court and court of appeals ruled in favor of The Daily, the case, Zurcher v. Stanford Daily, was brought to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1978, with the nation’s highest court ruling 5-3 in favor of Zurcher. The ensuing outcry among journalists and the public led to Congress’s passage of the Privacy Protection Act of 1980, which established the requirement of a subpoena to search newsrooms for unpublished materials.

With the launch of its website in 1995, The Daily became one of the first college newspapers publishing on the Internet. The site is live and continuously updated throughout the year. It features content from the print edition, along with special Web-only content often including live blogs of sporting events and major campus events.

The Daily moved out of its old offices in the Storke Publications Building to its new home at the Lorry I. Lokey Stanford Daily Building in 2007, thanks to the generosity of Lorry I. Lokey ’49 and hundreds of other benefactors, which would not have been possible without the titanic effort of Arthur Charles Hoffman ’73 MBA ’76.

At this point, no one can possibly argue that political journalism has fulfilled its essential missions of creating an informed electorate and holding the powerful accountable.

But our top newsroom leaders have seen no need for a course change. In particular, they have failed to respond to the growing asymmetry between the political parties, even as one became overtly counter-majoritarian, anti-democratic, and unmoored to reality.

Press Watch agitates for change. It encourages reporters to fight disinformation more enthusiastically and effectively, especially when our democracy and people’s lives are at stake. It identifies best practices that others can emulate. It urges the reality-based parts of the industry to  explicitly condemn Fox News and other far-right propaganda outlets as disinformation operations.

A French association that supports pluralism of information and defends an independent, high-quality digital press.

J'aime l'info is a non-profit association under the French law of 1901. Its aim is to support pluralism of information and defend an independent, high-quality digital press.

J'aime l'info provides press publishers with a platform for collecting donations, enabling readers to support one or more news websites and thus contribute to the development of their business model.

Any online press site or news blog can join J'aime l'info, provided it meets certain membership conditions. Publishers can apply for funding for the development of their site or blog, as well as for specific projects, such as an investigation, a report or the creation of a new section. The editor undertakes to report to his donors, at least every three months, on the use of donations.

The donations collected are paid back to the press publishers by the association. For political and general information websites, donors benefit from a tax reduction of 66% of the amount of their donations, up to a limit of 20% of taxable income. They receive a tax receipt issued by J'aime l'info.

CRNI (a nonprofit organization) fights to protect the human rights and freedom of expression of cartoonists around the world.

CRNI envisions a world where cartoonists are free from persecution and able to use their creativity as a powerful tool for communication.

Our mission: strengthen the interconnectedness of cartoonists around the world, campaign to protect their human rights and defend those threatened as a result of their work.

We believe cartoonists occupy a unique role requiring specialised campaigning and defence.

Cartoonists are among those on the front lines of free speech. We monitor and verify threats in order to provide direct support to those who need it most. 

Our approach is always about the person – we do not distinguish on the basis of career level, fame or reputation, preferred format, platform or methodology.

Our client base ranges from internationally celebrated cartoonists to newcomers persecuted simply for putting a drawing on their social media.

Collaborative working is at the core of what CRNI does. We work with cartoonists’ organisations as well as human rights and freedom of expression NGOs all over the world.

We seek to form lasting relationships with cartoonists and gather support from the wider global community.

We are the only cartoonists' FOE organisation with an explicit human rights-based remit.

We are neither a publishing platform nor an education/pedagogy organisation. We put cartoonists, the people, before cartoons, the artwork, and therefore are more vociferous in our defensive posture than others with a "softer" mission.

Nor are we concerned with what might be termed professional rights, which separates us from existing associations, unions etcetera.

Our independence is vital, and that is safeguarded by support from individual donors.

Founded in 1999, Street Roots is a nonprofit media organization in Portland, Oregon that publishes a weekly, award-winning social justice newspaper sold by people experiencing homelessness and poverty to earn an income. Our model provides people with an immediate, dignified source of income by putting cash directly into people’s pockets and stabilizing lives as a bridge to more gainful employment. We are one of very few low-barrier income opportunities in the Portland metro area. We seek to transform the way individuals make income, build community, and create life-giving social networks.

The Student Press Law Center is an independent, non-partisan 501c(3) which works at the intersection of education, journalism and the law to promote, support and defend the First Amendment and press freedom rights of student journalists and their advisers at the high school and college levels. The SPLC provides information, training and legal assistance at no charge to student journalists and the educators who work with them. Founded in 1974, the SPLC is based in Washington, D.C.

We provide grants to support high-impact and innovative frontline work across various issues, without burdening grassroots organisations/individuals (which are often 100% focused on doing the actual work) with having to produce project grants. 

Our chain-of-trust is created by seeing for ourselves the work, and meeting the people who do the work. 

For example, we went to Kharkiv in Ukraine to meet 'Tony,' an English volunteer first responder. He has his own response vehicle. With missiles hitting the city daily, he doesn't have time to apply for a project grant! He's literally hands-on saving lives every day. He needs tourniquets and Israeli bandages. His option is to use his own savings, or borrow from friends. Planet Humana stepped in to provide a cash grant to purchase those items, and to keep him and his crew and cars mobile.

Planet Humana draws its funds from a small circle of high wealth individuals. We outsource almost all our administration. We are growth-limited, with a view to maximising the flow of funds straight to where it makes the biggest difference. We're hands-on, and boots-on-the-ground.

In October 2024, *Momus* celebrated its tenth anniversary. HRF is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights and democracy globally. HRF works to promote freedom where it’s most at risk: in countries ruled by authoritarian regimes. 

We do this in three main ways: by supporting grassroots activists and providing them the resources, skills, and attention to make a difference in their countries; by popularizing the struggle for freedom and against dictatorship and bringing human rights into the mainstream of global public discussion; and by producing international legal reports, public letters, and op-eds that can influence institutions, policymakers, and the public in the direction of protecting individual rights in countries ruled by authoritarian regimes.

The Granta Trust is the charitable foundation that runs the leading literary quarterly Granta.

The Granta Trust is the charitable foundation that runs the leading literary quarterly Granta.

Relaunched in 1979, *Granta* publishes new work from established writers alongside unknown and emerging voices, including work in translation. Each edition of the magazine features a mix of fiction, reportage, memoir, poetry and photography. In its early years, *Granta* served as a critical go-between for transatlantic literary culture in a time before the internet allowed English and American writers to readily compare notes on literary developments. Today *Granta* – with a much wider, global readership – fulfils a more central mission for the literary world: it exhibits the writing of the future, much of which finds its way into book form years later.**** 

*Granta* publishes, on average, some eighty writers a year in print, and one-hundred-and-sixty in its online edition. In 2023, thirty of them were new talents, or new to an English-speaking audience. We feature at least two photo essays per issue, with many more appearing on Granta.com. The editorial team’s close collaboration with translators ensures that *Granta* enjoys a wide geographical reach. *Granta* takes pride in working with writers and photographers from all backgrounds and communities. Writing rarely provides a stable income, which makes it difficult for writers without sufficient means to develop their craft and establish important connections. *Granta* has a long history of finding and publishing under-represented voices, and providing young writers with a platform where they can be discovered by agents, publishers, and, most importantly, readers. 

Past contributors whose careers have been developed by the magazine include Kazuo Ishiguro, Richard Ford, Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie, Zadie Smith, Sally Rooney, Svetlana Alexievich and Binyavanga Wainaina, among many others. Our ‘Best of Young’ issues, released decade by decade, introduce the most important voices of each generation – in Britain, America, Brazil and Spain – and define the contours of the literary landscape. 

In 2023, as part of *Granta*’s mission to support new writers, we started a programme of writing workshops with our education partners, Professional Writing Academy. The Granta Writers’ Workshops are designed to help writers to improve their technical skills in a supportive and stimulating environment. Bursary-funded places are available on each course for those in financial need – so far, 40 per cent of the awards have gone to writers with a disability, and 60 per cent of the recipients are from the Global South. The courses are oversubscribed, and places are awarded on a competitive basis to writers showing exceptional promise. 

Part of the success of the magazine is reflected by the fact that writers first** published in *Granta* frequently go on to win prizes – in the past year alone contributions to *Granta* have won, or been shortlisted, for the O. Henry Prize, the BBC National Short Story Prize, the Forward Prize, and the Best of the Net prize. This year’s contributors to the magazine have won or been nominated for the Nobel Prize, the Booker Prize, the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction, the RSL Ondaatje Prize, the Rathbones Folio Prize, and the Gordon Burn Prize. 

The magazine currently has a circulation of 23,000. We produce a regular, critically-acclaimed podcast, while Granta.com, our online platform, records more than 350,000 pageviews monthly. In addition to reaching a worldwide audience directly, we also offer institutional subscriptions, which give students across the globe access to our archive. The physical archive of *Granta*, which includes valuable editorial correspondence with our writers, is held by the British Library. 

Few literary magazines are able to thrive without external funding. The income from our endowment and from subscriptions, advertising and courses cover only a part of our costs. Without the generosity of individuals and organisations such as the Ford Foundation and the British Council, *Granta* would be unable to fulfil its mission of being the leading literary quarterly in the English-speaking world.

**If you could do anything with technology, what will you do?**

Humans On The Loop is a transdisciplinary inquiry into the nature of agency in our age of automation.

In our AI-infused society, the gap between imagination and “reality” is smaller than it’s ever been — and now it’s time for humankind to graduate from asking if our dreams are possible to asking how we can dream better. This means cultivating deeper self-awareness, more discipline and humility, and a better metaphysics of technology to help us wield these new superpowers. But decades into a period of rapid information scaling, our grasp of consensus reality and executive function have eroded, causing an epistemic crisis. The wicked problems of this century require coordination at unprecedented scale, but our greatest natural resource — attention — has worn even thinner than our topsoil. How do we regenerate it and restore the faculties we need to be good stewards of this new ecology of minds?

Navigating the challenges that come with new information technologies is a group exercise and demands inherently plural approaches. The right response to tools that amplify our biases is to lean in with curiosity and play, not fearI have spent two decades studying and synthesizing  perspectives on intelligence and technology, innovation, and human-technology co-evolution…as well as testing bleeding-edge creative tools in public, helping cultivate systems literacies for navigating transformation, and fostering a massive network of mentors and collaborators with whom I share a devotion to the cultivation of a healthy Biosphere and Technosphere. As AI comes of age, this is the moment to recruit as many of them as we can into a multimodal public inquiry on wisdom and technology, power and responsibility, holistic practices for cultivating saner futures…and how we can keep Humans On The Loop and at the wheel.

It's going to be a trip — how can we make sure that it’s a good one?

This project exists to foster a renaissance of collaboration and the conditions for new ways of knowing. Its goals include to:

– Boost public discourse at the intersection of technology and wisdom
– Create a legacy of public goods that help train instruments for deepening our understanding
– Prototype and demonstrate experimental tools for thought
– Promote the adoption of reflexive AI for both private and public good
– Help map the emergent ecosystem of changemaking orgs and wise innovators
– Fertilize new narratives and strategies for navigating "wicked problems"
– Bridge domains and cultures in positive-sum collaboration

Chapter Four Uganda is an independent a non-profit organisation working to defend civil liberties and promote human rights for all. 

Established in 2013, the organisation works in the courts, legislature and communities to provide bold and innovative legal response through strategic and public interest litigation, first line legal representation, human rights research and documentation, legislative and strategic advocacy, and general counsel support. We work with human rights defenders, pro-democracy actors and civil society organisations - with keen focus on the most vulnerable, underrepresented, and discriminated sections of the society. 

Over the past decade, Chapter Four has grown into a dependable source of integrity, purposeful public interest, and an impartial advocate for justice for all no matter their world view, social, political leaning, or sexual orientation/gender identity.

Convocation Research and Design (CoRDs) is a research, design, and art agency that combines human rights, technology, activism, advocacy, policy and design together to make complex technology more human readable. CoRD entwines justice, research and design to create cutting edge research, support policy, build provocative tools and creative activist interventions. With our staff and affiliates we build technology and tech interventions, along with crafting research and research outputs, using design research methods, qualitative research, quantitative research, criticality and technology analysis.

Convocation Design + Research catalyzes change by creating innovative public facing research and advocacy work, through campaigns, research publications, consulting, and tool building that pushes for social justice and equity driven technology. We believe in good communication strategies and great design to help tell research and unpack some of technology’s most difficult problems. Some of our work manifests as publications creating frameworks and exploring topics that affect everyday users, such as when to use AI in cities, how online harassment effects journalists and activists, and how to work with emerging technology through an intersectional lens.

We think of our work across four areas: weave, entangle, secure and transfer.
