Overview

Bluemind Foundation is the fastest-growing nonprofit organization dedicated to mental health in West Africa. Headquartered in Lomé, Togo, and active in Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and France, Bluemind has emerged as a pioneering force in reshaping the conversation around mental health, particularly for women, in regions where such discussions are often stigmatized or overlooked. The organization was founded by Marie-Alix de Putter, who transformed the personal tragedy of her husband’s assassination and her own lived experiences with trauma, depression, and anxiety into a movement for collective healing, hope, and dignity.

Vision and Mission

Bluemind Foundation operates under a simple yet profound principle: mental health is health. It is not a privilege; it is social, cultural, political, and economic. Neglecting mental health perpetuates cycles of poverty, exclusion, and suffering that affect millions. Our vision is a world where mental health care is accessible, destigmatized, and integrated into communities, particularly for vulnerable populations such as women, youth, and underserved communities in West Africa.

Our mission is to empower communities to recognize, support, and promote mental well-being, leveraging culturally rooted approaches and locally trusted actors. We aim to build networks of trained ambassadors who can provide immediate support, guidance, and referrals to formal mental health services, thus bridging the gap between professional care and community needs.

Programmatic Approach: Heal by Hair

Bluemind Foundation’s flagship program, Heal by Hair, exemplifies our innovative, community-driven approach. This program trains professional hairdressers to become mental health ambassadors. Salons—everyday spaces that are trusted, familiar, and socially central—become safe havens where women can speak freely, share their struggles, receive support, and access referrals for professional care when necessary.

The approach is radically simple, culturally grounded, and rigorously evaluated. Each hairdresser receives comprehensive training on mental health literacy, active listening, identifying signs of trauma or distress, and providing empathetic guidance. The model is highly scalable: one woman supported for one dollar, making it cost-effective while producing significant social impact.

Achievements to Date

Since its inception, Bluemind Foundation has achieved remarkable milestones:

851 hairdressers trained and 453 certified as mental health ambassadors.

Over 100,000 women supported across Togo, Cameroon, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Multiple awards and recognitions for innovation in social impact and mental health interventions.

Rigorous impact measurement showing improved emotional well-being, reduced stigma, and enhanced access to care for women participants.

These achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of a community-based, culturally sensitive, and scalable model that empowers local actors to support mental health in practical, meaningful ways.

Strategic Expansion

In October 2025, Bluemind Foundation will launch its largest wave of training yet, with 400 new hairdressers being trained, doubling the number of certified ambassadors to 800. This expansion is a key step toward our 2030 goal of reaching one million women, ensuring that mental health support is both accessible and normalized across communities.

Beyond expanding Heal by Hair, Bluemind is exploring complementary initiatives:

Development of digital platforms for mental health education and remote support.

Partnerships with healthcare providers, NGOs, and government agencies to strengthen referral networks.

Advocacy campaigns to reduce stigma and influence policy on mental health in West Africa.

Methodology and Philosophy

Bluemind Foundation’s methodology combines evidence-based mental health practices with culturally sensitive approaches. Recognizing that mental health is influenced by social, economic, and cultural factors, our programs are designed to integrate seamlessly into daily life. Hair salons, for instance, are not only venues for beauty services but also trusted community spaces where women feel comfortable sharing personal experiences.

Training emphasizes empathy, ethical responsibility, and awareness of local contexts. Hairdressers become ambassadors, not therapists, providing initial support and connecting women to professional care when needed. This approach ensures sustainability, community ownership, and scalable impact.

Impact and Social Change

Bluemind Foundation’s work has transformed the landscape of mental health in West Africa:

Women report feeling heard, supported, and empowered in managing their mental well-being.

Communities benefit from reduced stigma and increased awareness of mental health issues.

Health systems experience improved referral pathways as trained ambassadors connect individuals to formal care.

The organization’s model demonstrates that small investments in community-based interventions can produce large-scale, lasting social change. Each dollar spent on training and supporting a hairdresser translates directly into one woman receiving support, with ripple effects across families and communities.

Leadership and Governance

Bluemind Foundation is led by Marie-Alix de Putter, a mental health advocate with over 18 years of experience in social impact, communications, and program leadership. Under her guidance, Bluemind has established transparent governance structures, strong partnerships, and rigorous evaluation protocols to ensure accountability, sustainability, and continuous learning.

Future Goals

By 2030, Bluemind Foundation aims to:

Reach 1 million women across West Africa.

Expand the network of certified ambassadors beyond 800, integrating additional community actors.

Influence policy and public discourse to prioritize mental health as an essential component of overall health.

Develop innovative tools and digital solutions to enhance accessibility and support.

Conclusion

Bluemind Foundation represents a radical rethinking of mental health support in West Africa. By empowering trusted community actors, leveraging familiar spaces, and combining cultural sensitivity with rigorous evaluation, it ensures that mental health care is accessible, practical, and dignified. Through programs like Heal by Hair, Bluemind is not only transforming individual lives but also shaping communities, policies, and societies toward a future where mental health is recognized as a universal right.
