Over half of Guatemalans live in poverty, with rural Indigenous communities facing the highest rates of chronic childhood malnutrition, affecting 50-90% of children. This leads to physical stunting and cognitive impairments that limit their potential.
ABPD works with rural Maya communities to combat malnutrition through a community-driven, sustainable model. By focusing on health, nutrition, and capacity-building, this approach empowers local communities to address their own challenges long-term.
Core Objectives:
- Empower Women: Involve women in decision-making on nutrition, infrastructure, and food production.
- Youth Leadership: Equip young people to lead community transformation.
- Inclusive Engagement: Promote gender equity by engaging men and local authorities.
- Clean Water: Build water systems and safe waste management solutions.
- Safer Cookstoves: Reduce indoor air pollution through efficient, low-emission stoves.
- Improved Sanitation: Install latrines and educate on hygiene practices.
- Child Nutrition: Focus on nutrition during the critical first 1,000 days of life.
- Food Security: Support home gardens and small-scale livestock for better nutrition.
- Family Planning: Provide access to family planning resources.
