Creative Caring for People with Developmental Disabilities

In 1982, Vita Living was founded by Houstonian, Renée Wallace, to provide a “Vital Life” for her son and other adults with IDD. The original residence (the first licensed group-home in Texas) gave six behaviorally challenging adults a permanent home and 24-hour care. Vita Living maintained three group homes until the early 2000’s, when the organization expanded its service reach and began acquiring residences in the Sharpstown and Spring Branch neighborhoods. Most residents attended day center programs across the city until 2016, when Vita Living opened an on-site day program to improve the quality of life of its clients along with tailored programming and medical attention.

Our goal is to keep those we serve in the communities they know and love, regardless of behavioral challenges and evolving healthcare needs. Each program is designed to give clients security and routine while also offering them opportunities for enrichment and community engagement. Vita Living provides three crucial programs to over 400 adults and children with IDD from the Greater Houston area and seven surrounding counties.

1) Residential: Vita Living owns and operates 20 Houston-based group homes for up to 80 adults with IDD. Homes are staffed 24 hours a day, and clients receive individual support.

2) Day Program: 97% of resident clients attend the Vita Living Center, where they enjoy tailored activities and receive medical attention as needed.

3) Case Management: The Community Living Assistance and Support Services (CLASS) program is designed for people with developmental disabilities living with family or independently. Currently, the program is the largest of its kind in the state and extends case management services to over 300 children and adults across a seven-county region in Texas.
