Village Impact is a Canadian charity that partners with rural communities in Kenya to build and resource public schools, with a focus on creating safe, functional learning environments where students can thrive. The organization was founded over 16 years ago in response to deeply under-resourced public schools in rural and conflict-affected regions, internally displaced people communities, where overcrowded classrooms, unsafe infrastructure, and limited access to basic services were significant barriers to learning. From the beginning, Village Impact’s approach has been rooted in partnership, working alongside local government, trusted local organizations, school leadership, and communities to strengthen education from the ground up.
Village Impact’s mission is to improve access to quality public education by addressing the foundational conditions required for learning. This includes constructing and upgrading classrooms, improving water, sanitation, and electricity, supporting school leadership, and resourcing schools with programs that address student wellbeing and opportunity. Over time, the organization has expanded its work beyond infrastructure to include mental health support, technology and digital skills access, food programming, student leadership and experiential learning programs, and capacity-building initiatives for principals and teachers. All work is designed to align with Kenya’s public education system and to support long-term school stability and community ownership.
To date, Village Impact has constructed 16 schools across Nakuru County, 5 high schools and 11 primary, impacting tens of thousands of students. Every day, over 6,000 students attend a Village Impact- partner school. Past and current activities include early childhood development classroom construction, primary and secondary school modernization projects, clean water and sanitation improvements, technology labs, school leadership conferences, student possibility experiences, and the development of regional counselling network models to support student mental health.
Looking ahead, Village Impact is focused on deepening impact within existing partner schools while refining a clear school lifecycle framework that supports sustainability and eventual graduation from infrastructure dependency. Future activities include completing planned early childhood classrooms, expanding community-embedded mental health and counselling support, strengthening school leadership and governance, increasing access to technology and digital skills, supporting school feeding programs and continuing to innovate experiential programs that broaden students’ horizons. Across all work, Village Impact remains committed to collaborative partnership, accountability, and the belief that strong public schools are essential to breaking cycles of poverty and creating lasting opportunity.
