Our marketplace-style food bank allows customers to choose their own foods

The Sumner Community Food Bank helps our neighbors in need to feed their families by providing nutritious food and groceries so they can focus on succeeding without worrying about their next meal. Our mission is also to be good stewards of food surpluses and increase public awareness on issues of hunger in our community. We partner with other food banks and charitable nonprofits to ensure that the needs of the community are met.

Food is a basic human need. We improve access to healthy food and take advantage of our unique position in the community in these practical ways:

  • Food Purchases: We provide a variety of healthy & culturally relevant food, purchasing staple foods such as milk, eggs & meat when donations do not cover our needs.
  • Location: Sumner, WA contains many warehouses and logistics companies, with whom we partner to supply our marketplace with a wide variety of donated food.
  • Backpack Program: We provide weekend food backpacks for students at local schools, covering gaps in school-provided meals.
  • Partnerships: We partner with over 70 other food banks, pantries, & outreach programs, touching the lives of over 62,000 people in the region.
  • Multilingual Communication: We communicate in multiple languages for our diverse client base, including English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian.
  • EXPANDED Marketplace: Our marketplace-concept food bank allows clients to choose their own food, providing autonomy and self-respect while reducing food waste. In 2023, we expanded this marketplace to allow for more variety, a larger produce section, and a deli.
  • Stigma Free: We provide a safe and welcoming shopping experience because we know that shame prevents many from receiving services.
  • Resource Access: Hunger is often only one problem our clients face, so we provide computer access to make electronic referrals for social services, job searching, and other community resource sign-ups. We have partnered with organizations such as the Pierce County Library System, The Sumner-Bonney Lake Family Center, tax professionals, job fairs, and the Pierce County Local Impact Network, who visit our food bank once a month to provide free dental care.
