Founded by French industrialist Emile Etienne Guimet (1836-1918), the Guimet museum first opened in Lyon in 1879 and was later transfered to Paris in 1889. Devoted to travel, Guimet was in 1876 commissioned by the French minister of public instruction to study the religions of the Far East. The museum contains many of the fruits of this expedition, including a fine collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelains and many objects relating not only to the religions of the Far East but also to those of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome who currently are to be viewed in the Louvre museum.
