Concerning data reveals that 23% of Asian New Yorkers live in poverty, significantly higher than the citywide average of 16% of all New Yorkers. And a staggering 28% of Asian American older adults 65+ live in poverty. As the American Bar Association reveals, Asian elders, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, endure more social isolation and mental health struggles than their peers due to linguistics, financial, and cultural barriers. These factors combined significantly impact the mental and emotional well-being of Asian American older adults in a city where depression and suicide among older adult immigrants are on the rise.

Dear Cherished Supporter,

Thank you for taking a moment to connect with our mission. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to share our incredible journey with you—a journey that began with a genuine concern for our beloved elderly Asian American community. In the midst of the challenging times brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, we witnessed the hardships faced by our elders, from food insecurity to intense loneliness and social isolation. The urgency to act became even more apparent when we learned that a staggering 28% of Asian American older adults in NYC live in poverty, surpassing the citywide average of 16%. It is crucial to understand that the pervasive "model minority" myth masks the very real challenges this community endures. This stereotype not only oversimplifies the diverse experiences within our community but also perpetuates harmful narratives, leaving many elders without the vital resources they need and leading to isolation and despair.

It is in these times that Heart of Dinner was born—a heartfelt response to nurture those who remind us of our own grandparents. We felt a deep calling to reassure our Asian American elders that they are cherished, seen, and valued beyond measure. For many of us, especially those with immigrant heritage, food holds a significance that goes far beyond sustenance. It is a profound gesture overflowing with love, respect, and cultural richness.

Our journey began in a humble 350 square-foot apartment on the cusp of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. We transformed our home into a sanctuary of cultural resonance and dignified care for our Elders. Starting with homemade meals that brought back memories of comforting family dishes that our own grandparents loved to eat, paired with handwritten notes of love and joy on each to-go container. We soon expanded to providing comprehensive care packages.

These care packages are more than just nutrients, they are filled with culturally thoughtful items like bok choy, bags of rice, and mung beans. And to add more layers of personal touch, we build care packages using bags that are uniquely hand-illustrated and attached with handwritten notes in our beneficiaries’ native languages to evoke a sense of home and connection. We organize extraordinary volunteers, worldwide, to contribute their heartfelt notes and bags!

None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our community. Heart of Dinner's champions, donors, partners, dedicated team, extraordinary volunteers, and collaborators have been instrumental in our journey. We are incredibly honored to share that our journey navigating from a pop-up relief efforts initiative to a budding 501c3 public charity has been a labor of love, intention, and meticulous care. Carrying on our mission beyond the time of the Covid-19 pandemic holds a special place in our hearts, as it signifies our unwavering commitment to serving and uplifting our beloved Asian American community of Elders who've faced inequities for far too long. And we at Heart of Dinner are humbled and privileged to address these needs that have been historically overlooked. 

As of early 2024, Heart of Dinner has provided over 185,000 meals across NYC reaching beneficiaries who live in significantly under-resourced and underinvested communities.

The CoolineKids mission is to empower and equip young leaders of color through innovative, skill-based programming.


Founded on April 1st, 2014 by 9-year-old Christian, Coolinekids set out to make an impact on East Palo Alto by providing children a safe space to have fun. Through many years of service, growth and innovation, CoolineKids launched a 2 week summer experience for 100 young people in East Palo Alto to teach leadership through play and art. As CoolineKids is our community’s only leadership development program serving all ages; today, we share our renewed commitment to the East Palo Alto community by launching our new organization. The CoolineKids Organization teaches K-8 students creativity, compassion, communication, and collaboration (our four foundational principles of service leadership) through our hands-on curriculum that includes cooking, photography, reading, science, art, play, and engineering. CoolineKids believes young people learn best from other young people, that’s why we engage high school students to support as leaders at our summer camps. High school youth grow their leadership skills through a variety of programs including our CrewCamp training experience, the Summer Leadership Academy and Camp Leadership Team. Our vision is that all youth will grow to become service-centric, family-minded leaders dedicated to inspiring change in their communities. And we are eager to live that out by empowering and equipping young leaders of color through innovative, skill-based programming.

We envision a society where we and our sisters are spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically free from all forms of violence and harm in the criminal legal system.

Lioness: Justice Impacted Women's Alliance (JIWA)

Works to exonerate innocent people through DNA testing and reform the criminal justice system to prevent injustice.

The Innocence Project was founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University to assist prisoners who could be proven innocent through DNA testing. More than 350 people in the United States have been exonerated by DNA testing, including 38 who pleaded guilty to crimes they did not commit and 20 who served time on death row. The Innocence Project provided direct representation or critical assistance in more than 200 exonerations.   The Innocence Project’s full-time staff attorneys and Cardozo clinic students provide direct representation or critical assistance in most of these cases. The Innocence Project’s groundbreaking use of DNA technology to free innocent people has provided irrefutable proof that wrongful convictions are not isolated or rare events but instead arise from systemic defects. Now an independent nonprofit organization closely affiliated with Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the Innocence Project’s mission is nothing less than to free the staggering numbers of innocent people who remain incarcerated and to bring substantive reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment. Earth-based spirituality encourages us to seek healing and wisdom within our own bodies, through our connection with the natural world, and by listening to the ancestral wisdom that resides within. With this as the foundation of our spiritual practice, we learn to trust ourselves more and are able to experience our innate connection to all life, including human, plant and animal life. Some of the modalities we engage with are dreamwork, family constellation, embodiment practices, voice work, earth-based ceremony, and ancestor work.

It is no surprise the inequities that exist in our world are mirrored in our spiritual and healing communities. They manifest in a variety of ways, from programs and offerings that privilege those with wealth and resources to the unpaid and emotional labor often required of BIPOC participants in these spaces. These inequities live within a societal narrative that tells us we are separate: from one another, from our ancestors, from the earth, from our own deep knowing. We believe earth-based spirituality belongs to everyone. 

We strive to make spiritual healing work available to more people in our communities. We offer programs for free. For fee-based programs, we work to offer scholarships to QTBIPOC, elders and limited income participants. We want the participants and leaders of earth-based spirituality to be more representative of the cultures these practices derive from. Through our grant program we support BIPOC participants interested in exploring earth-based spirituality and healing and emerging BIPOC practitioners committed to our mission and values. We utilize a co-teaching model to bridge communities. 

As a volunteer-run organization, Bridging Spirit ensures 100% of donations and any revenue generated is reinvested directly into our mission. Additionally, a percentage of funds raised from events are donated to organizations supporting indigenous communities native to the land where those events are hosted.

WVMA serves the Muslim communities of Saratoga, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Campbell. We offer five daily prayers, regular Jumuah prayers, weekly halaqa, youth programs, and community events.

We hold Friday Prayers at the Saratoga Prospect Center located at 19848 Prospect Road, Saratoga CA 95070, and five daily prayers at our Saratoga masjid, located at 12370 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, Saratoga CA 95070. Started as 10-week walking challenge, 10 years ago, by 2 friends, GirlTrek is now a global movement of 1M+ Black women.

GirlTrek, the largest public health nonprofit for African-American women and girls in the United States. With nearly 100,000 neighborhood walkers, GirlTrek encourages women to use walking as a practical first step to inspire healthy living, families, and communities. As women organize walking teams, they mobilize community members to support monthly advocacy efforts and lead a civil rights-inspired health movement.

Beyond walking, GirlTrek’s active members support local and national policy to increase physical activity through walking, improve access to safe places to walk, protect and reclaim green spaces, and improve the walkability and built environments of 50 high-need communities across the United States.

With Partnership for a Healthier America, The Centers for Disease Control, Stanford Prevention Research Center, The American Council on Exercise, Safe Routes to School National Partnership, and The Sierra Club, GirlTrek has developed a world-class training for African-American women to serve as health professionals in the areas of fitness, mental health, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. In 2021 we served nearly 1,900 clients, virtually all from marginalized, underserved, and diverse communities.  In our 30 years serving the needs of Colorado communities, we have trained over 800 therapists to work specifically with these populations.  In 2022, we had our largest and most diverse class ever, preparing our providers to serve the ever-evolving populations of our state. ABOUT US:
Sequoia Center is a 501c3 nonprofit, providing low-cost, sliding-scale psychedelic-assisted therapies and related services in Portland, OR.  Our organization was founded in 2022 by two LGBTQIA+ identified therapists as a response to the growing disparity between increasing demand for psychedelic-assisted therapies and low accessibility for those most in need. 

Our mission is to increase accessibility to psychedelic healing for individuals historically underserved within the traditional healthcare system (e.g., those identifying as LGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC, those with complex or persistent mental health concerns).  Our direct services include ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, psychedelic integration and harm reduction counseling, community education, and case consultation for prospective clients, providers, and organizations seeking guidance on access to psychedelic services, treatment planning, or program development.  

Sequoia Center exists as a community hub where individuals from all social locations have access to affordable psychedelic-assisted healing services that meet their unique needs. We aim to return personal empowerment to individuals where it has been taken away by harmful systems of oppression and abuses of power.  In the context of our mission, “accessibility” refers not only to financial accessibility, but also to the availability of providers who “match” with different client identities or lived experiences, and services that are rooted in trauma-informed and client-centered care. Accessibility is also increased through collaboration with similar values-based organizations; for this reason, we aim not to work in isolation, but through partnerships with other community organizations, so that clients can be more fully supported across the arc of their healing journeys. 

OUR APPROACH AND IMPACT:
Sequoia Center prioritizes individualized care, where services are adapted to meet each person’s unique needs.  This is accomplished through deep listening and meeting people where they’re at, and through careful assessment, preparation, care coordination, and open communication.  

Our direct services are offered through a restorative justice subsidized care model, which empowers recipients to choose their own hourly rate for services (considering not only income, but also historical and systemic factors that lead to health inequities). We do not require lengthy applications or proof of income/financial hardship for clients to receive subsidized services. We pay all our therapists the same hourly rate no matter what hourly rate their clients have chosen. This program has thus far been quite successful and has created a positive impact track record for our community and donors.

Since our inception in 2022, nearly 75% of our total client base identifies as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+ and received reduced-cost ketamine-assisted psychotherapy services through our subsidized care program.  The most common indication treated was complex trauma & PTSD; others included eating disorders, addiction, severe anxiety, medical trauma, and relationship issues.

OUR VALUES:
At Sequoia Center, we believe that psychedelic-assisted therapies can offer healing from trauma through re-connection to ourselves, others, communities, and the world. Further, we believe that organizations providing psychedelic-assisted therapies have a duty to create equitable access for communities who experience disproportionate levels of trauma and systemic inequities in healthcare access.

We chose the name Sequoia Center because Sequoia trees propagate by fire - a beautiful metaphor illustrating our belief that challenges and difficulty can often transform into beauty, growth, and resilience, especially when we are witnessed and held through the fire and pain. We view healing as a collaborative effort; every person within our organization who interacts with a client plays a role in supporting that client’s healing process. Our team is interdisciplinary by design, as we believe that each person’s unique training, experience, and perspective contributes to a rich and holistic healing environment, where we are all able to learn from one another. Furthermore, we believe in the importance of including a client’s support system (e.g., family members, friends, other healing professionals) in the arc of treatment, as well as in the importance of ongoing community connection and support in maintaining healing and wellness. 

We highly value diversity, and as such, we actively recruit team members with a diversity of backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. As a team of community members and allies, we diligently work to create, and operate from, policies and practices that ensure equal access, representation, and cultural sensitivity. We also value creative “outside of the box” thinking and visioning and are continually working to adapt our services and internal processes to most efficiently and effectively meet the needs of our communities (including our team members and the clients we serve).

WHY DONATE TO SEQUOIA CENTER?

1.	We have established experience supporting LGBTQIA+ communities, as that has been a primary focus of ours since our inception in 2022. We believe strongly in the importance of affinity matching (i.e., providing clients with the option to work with therapists who share aspects of their identities and/or lived experiences). Currently about half of our therapists identify as LGBTQIA+ and specialize in working with queer communities.

2.	As bridge builders between local and national psychedelic communities and the health care system, our network reaches far and wide.  We are regularly approached by a wide variety of individuals and organizations looking for services, education, training, and advising in adapting psychedelic services to their particular needs.  Our mission is first and foremost about accessibility, not just within our own clinic walls (i.e., through making our own services affordable and available to all), but beyond - through helping individuals find the route to psychedelic services that is *best for their unique needs*.  Often, this means getting creative and collaborating with other providers, organizations, and resources, and facilitating communication and cohesion among people with different backgrounds and approaches.  

3.	We are a heart-centered team with a wide diversity of skills, expertise, and training backgrounds, including clinical psychology, social work, psychiatry, naturopathic medicine, shamanic healing, art therapy, harm reduction, and peer support. We value bringing together our diversity in the service of a truly interdisciplinary approach where all perspectives are not only valued but viewed as crucial to success.

4.	We value public education and training for new practitioners; our team has vast expertise within these arenas.  We are actively building out a robust training site for graduate students, interns, and new practitioners to gain hands-on experience in psychedelic modalities.   This will not only keep our costs down, allowing us to serve a higher volume of clients, but it will provide crucial experience and supervision for trainees. 

5.	We value real-world research, particularly where psychedelic services are being offered in new or innovative ways that differ from how they are offered within existing clinical trials.  That is, we aim to improve our own services while simultaneously contributing to a greater understanding of the effectiveness of psychedelic services across contexts.  Data is only ever collected with full consent from the clients we serve and never used or shared for commercial purposes.  We view participating in outcomes research as a commitment to our own ongoing learning as well as to improving results for the clients we serve.

Computer Science training teaches students to take pride in what they do, to accept feedback and peer criticism, and be excited about sharing their work with the world.  High levels of quality computer science education will transform students into highly paid employees and entrepreneurs, as well as highly effective citizens.
