Pickens County Meals on Wheels (PCMOW) explicitly focuses its mission on combating three leading threats to the aging population: hunger, isolation, and the loss of independence. PCMOW operates out of the McKissick Center for Senior Wellness in Liberty, SC. The organization provides critical community interventions as follows:
Senior Hunger & Nutritional Health - volunteers deliver fresh, hot, and balanced meals daily to approximately 400 homebound neighbors. Unlike many programs, eligibility is based entirely on a person being homebound and unable to prepare food—not on their age or income.
Social Isolation & Loneliness - for many homebound residents, a volunteer driver is the only person they see all day. These regular daily check-ins deliver critical social connections and a warm smile to seniors who live alone.
Safety & Aging in Place - by providing regular wellness checks, volunteer drivers can monitor a senior's physical welfare. They serve as an early warning system and link vulnerable clients back to families or other community support services.
PCMOW operates three Young at Heart (YAH) senior center programs designed for active older adults age 55 and older. These centers serve as hubs for social interaction, wellness and nutrition. The YAH centers are located in Liberty, Central and Easley where seniors attend for daily hot lunch, socialization, group activities, and senior exercise programs. PCMOW offers transportation to and from these centers to those who are unable to drive and qualify for the service. The YAH centers serve as a vital community resource hub for older adults in Pickens County.
