I lived in the Haight from 1979 to 1990. Bound Together Books was my bookstore, and the meeting place for the Radical Fairies, a few of whom were my dearest friends. Mauds was our bar.

Eye Zen Presents illuminates and preserves hidden LGBTQ+ histories through interdisciplinary performance, archival activation, and intergenerational exchange. We create immersive public art rooted in place, memory, and accessibility that connects queer elders, artists, and audiences. Our practice pairs hands-on archival preservation with new creative works so that endangered legacies are safeguarded and shared as living culture.

Kids’ Club of Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow provides support for underserved youth.  As a community organization, we marshal resources, increase local awareness, advocate for programming, and strengthen services to improve the lives of children and families. We collaborate with a variety of community organizations to identify needs, close gaps in services and provide opportunities for children.

Founded in 2006, the Benicia Chamber Players’ mission is to provide a classical chamber music concert series to underserved East Bay areas including Benicia, Lafayette, Piedmont and Vallejo. Our aim is to cultivate a community of local and other world-class professional musicians with a love of playing chamber music who are dedicated to sharing that love with audiences.

Manzil Mystics empowers underserved youth through music, creating safe, joyful learning spaces and building skills for the future.

Manzil Mystics was founded by a group of young musicians who grew up in low-income families in Delhi and found their voice through Manzil; a learning community and nonprofit started by an IIM Ahmedabad graduate, Ravi Gulati. The nurturing and creative environment of Manzil gave them not just music, but confidence, purpose, and a happy, safe space to grow. Five of these youth (the co-founders of Manzil Mystics) went on to earn 100% scholarships to study in the USA. On returning, they realized that over 4.4 million children in Delhi-and millions more across India—lack the same opportunities to learn and express themselves through music.

They also discovered a deeper gap: while India has a centuries-old musical heritage, there was no structured, inclusive initiative to make music education accessible and meaningful for every child. To change this, they founded Manzil Mystics; a nonprofit dedicated to using the power of music to educate, empower, and create livelihoods.

Our vision is simple yet powerful: every child deserves at least one hour of happy and safe space each week through music to learn, express, and heal.

Our mission is to enable access to quality music education for 1 million children by 2027 through our Learning Through Music (LTM) model, which combines education, livelihood, and community-building. We aim to nurture a generation of creative, empathetic, and confident children—while helping young musicians from low-income backgrounds earn dignified livelihoods as music facilitators.

Core Programs:

1. Learning Through Music:

A Curriculum implemented in government and low-income schools, this curriculum integrates music with academics and life skills, helping children develop focus, empathy, and confidence while learning subjects like language, math, and social-emotional awareness through songs.

2. Learning Through Music Fellowship:

An 18-month livelihood and leadership program for young musicians from underserved communities. Fellows are trained, mentored, and placed in schools to teach music while earning a stipend transforming both their own lives and those of thousands of children.

3. The Music Bus:

India’s first mobile music school, the Bus brings music to communities with little or no access. It creates joyful, safe learning spaces in schools and neighborhoods, reaching thousands of children and families each year.

Livelihood: Empowering young musicians to become educators and community leaders.

Community Building: Fostering harmony, social change, and emotional wellbeing through music gatherings, festivals, and performances.

Why It Matters: In a country of over 52 million children under 18 children struggle with anxiety, stress, and lack of creative outlets, Manzil Mystics uses music as a pathway to mental wellness, self-expression, and social change. Music helps children learn better, feel safer, and believe in themselves. It bridges divides of gender, class, and faith—making it a universal language of hope and belonging.

Our Future:

By 2027, we aim to reach 1 million children and train 1,000 community musicians across India, creating a movement that redefines learning—not just as academics, but as joyful exploration through music.

Arts Ed Alliance CONNECTS and CATALYZES arts education communities for a more just and creative San Francisco Bay Area.

The Arts Education Alliance of the Bay Area is a coalition of arts providers, educators, and advocates working together to ensure that all youth in the San Francisco Bay Area receive a comprehensive and quality arts education.

A fiscally sponsored project of Intersection for the Arts, AEA serves as a regional hub and unifying voice for local coalitions of teaching artists, school districts, students and their families, community arts organizations, cultural institutions, city and county agencies, funders, business leaders, and arts education advocates throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We align our regional work with state efforts through Create CA and with national efforts through the National Guild for Community Art Education. AEA supports our members to cultivate responsive leadership and advocacy for arts education through ongoing convening events, professional learning workshops, monthly newsletters, and advocacy resources.

We achieve our mission through local and regional convenings, ongoing coaltion meetings and webinars, professional development opportunities and more.

Our next upcoming concert is at Carnegie Hall on January 13, 2026 when world-renowned operatic tenor Jonathan Tetelman will take the stage with latin grammy nominated guitarist and New York Yankees legend Bernie Williams. They will be joined by members of the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, drummer Ari Hoenig, bassist John Benitez, Jose Reyes of the Met, Stephon Marbury of the Knicks and violinist Katia Lindor.

The Fondation des États-Unis is an American cultural center & student residence located in Paris.

The United States Foundation (Fondation des Etats-Unis or FEU) is a student residence and multicultural center located in Paris. Founded in 1930 by American philanthropists Homer and Mable Gage with a donation to the University of Paris, its primary purpose is to provide a lively home with affordable rent to young Americans studying in Paris.

Located in Paris's 14th arrondissement across from the Parc Montsouris on the eco-campus of the Cite internationale universitaire de Paris (CiuP), the Foundation is housed in an 8000 square-meter art deco building designed by Pierre Leprince-Ringuet. The frescoes on the walls of its Grand Salon, by painter Robert La Montagne Saint-Hubert, are listed as a historic monument and can be visited by the public during European Heritage Days in September.

To fulfill its public-interest mission, the Foundation presents projects throughout the year that are led by its residents, alumni, its own Harriet Hale Woolley Fellowship artists, and other companies in artistic residence. As a non-profit organization, its concerts, exhibits, workshops, conferences, and performances are open to the general public free of charge. Each year, thanks to the center's grants and its partnership with the Fulbright Program, a new generation can learn and grow at the United States Foundation.

Story House Ithaca brings people together to share, study, create, and enjoy stories in all their forms.

Story House Ithaca brings people together around stories. We define “story” very broadly, to include fiction and nonfiction, poetry and song, documentary, journalism, photography, audio, film, theater, puppetry, visual and performance art, graphics, dance, and every other way of communicating ideas and experience. Our definition of “house” is also broad. We hope eventually to settle into our own space, but for now we’re excited to be popping up around the community.

**The Problem**

Our society is going through a period of fracturing, as people of different socioeconomic, cultural, and educational backgrounds divide into ever more insular groups. One reason for this is a lack of opportunities for people to interact in meaningful and non-threatening ways. This has had disastrous consequences in politics, public health, and many other areas.
  
 **Our Approach**

- Story House creates. We dream up, organize, and present workshops, discussions, readings, talks, screenings, exhibitions, performances, participatory projects, and other activities.

Lesley Greene (co-director) is a producer, designer, writer, and director. She worked for many years at the Kitchen Theatre Company, where she curated and produced three performance series, created sound and projection designs, and served as chief grant writer and head of marketing. She is a co-founder and co-organizer of Porchfest, a festival that began in Ithaca in 2007 and now takes place in more than 150 cities across North America.
  
Jonathan Miller (co-director) is a writer, journalist, editor, radio producer, podcaster, and media project leader whose work has taken him to more than 20 countries. Since 2006, he has been executive director of Homelands Productions, an award-winning journalism collective that specializes in public radio features and documentaries. Jon serves on the board of Ithaca City of Asylum and coordinates the ONWARDS project, which seeks to help displaced writers, artists, human rights defenders, and scholars find stability in the USA.

P Segal, nee Roberta Pizzimenti, was born & raised and still lives in San Francisco’s North Beach. She is a professional writer. She established ArtHouse to help artists, writers and musicians to remain in San Francisco.

P Segal has been a lifelong member of the city’s arts community. In 1990, she suggested moving Burning Man to the Black Rock Desert, and she opened the Center Camp Cafe in 1995. The event was planned in her flat for a decade.

Her zine, [**Proust Said That**](https://proustsaidthat.blog), was the first serial publication on the World Wide Web, and it’s the longest running publication online. In 1994, she introduced the engineers developing the Web to the young artists who would apply their skills to building the new field of computer graphics.

The need for [**ArtHouse**](https://arthousesf.org) became apparent when the cost of living escalated in San Francisco, and the once enormous community of artists was priced out. 

According to a 2017 Arts Commission survey, 75% of the artists still here in 2010 had already moved away or were planning to soon. Much of the community was already gone by 2010. P began to develop plans for a co-op format project for artists’ housing and venues that would enable them to come back.. 

In 2019, ArtHouse joined forces with the Intersection for the Arts, our fiscal sponsor. Since then, we’ve searched for foundations that had artists’ housing in their funding guidelines, and found none, and we looked for individual-nonprofit—or corporate-nonprofit—partnerships.

In recent months, we’ve opened discussion with the Community Arts Stabilization Trust, that wants to help us find buildings and return artists to the city. Artists created a new art movement here nearly every decade of the 20th century. The last new movement was Burning Man, and we’re curious about what magic will happen when the community returns.

Launched over 25 years ago as a source of innovation, Community Works serves people along the spectrum of justice system involvement. Our community includes currently/formerly incarcerated and system-impacted people, the majority of whom are Black or brown and low-income, including youth at risk for incarceration or whose parents are incarcerated. 

**What We Do?** 

CW prevents young people from entering criminal legal systems and improves outcomes for any who do by transforming justice at both the individual and systemic levels. We seek to move away from a systems-centered paradigm of safety and justice reliant on ineffective punitive measures and instead toward community-centered approaches that focus on equity, accountability, relationships, and healing.

As the largest fund for independent artists and cultural institutions in the Arab world, AFAC serves the collective necessity to pursue bold ideas, reclaim space, and share stories from our region on our own terms.

Culture shapes how we see ourselves, how we remember the past, and how we imagine the future. Independent voices are being silenced by war, repression, and economic collapse. Youth, who represent the region’s largest demographic, are largely excluded from cultural production and denied platforms to shape their futures. The threat of talent drain and cultural fragmentation has never been higher.

Since 2007, we have supported over 2,400 projects across 22 countries and their diasporas, awarding over $40 million in grants. Our model sustains not only the production of art but the long-term resilience of the cultural ecosystem. 

AFAC stands at the forefront of expression—investing in independent storytellers, visionaries, and institutions who challenge convention, spark dialogue, and preserve the richness of our collective narratives. We must act now to preserve cultural sovereignty and ensure that artists continue to imagine, question, and build the future of the region.
