Birthday Fundraiser for Earthquake Relief in Uto, Japan

20 years ago, almost to the day, I arrived in Uto city in Kumamoto, Japan to serve as an assistant language teacher through the JET Program at the local public schools. At the time I had no idea that it would become my home for 5 years and be such a formidable chapter of my life. The recent earthquake in Japan hit my "hometown" very hard. I have reached out to a few folks I still know there and while they are safe, there is extensive damage to many many buildings. While I was in Japan I was cared for and loved by grandmas, neighbors, teachers, students, and their families. Please help me celebrate my birthday by making a gift to Peace Boat Disaster Relief. After the 2016 earthquake in Kumamoto Peace Boat was there to support. Drawing on the experience, expertise, and networks built over years of disaster response, PBV is preparing to deploy tailored assistance, including: Relief Supplies and Food Assistance : Considering the deployment of “FOOBOUR,” a food truck that delivers relief supplies, provides on-site meal preparation, and serves hot meals. Response to Damaged Homes : Emergency response and preservation of damaged homes; support for the operation of disaster volunteer centers. Support for Evacuees : Support for evacuation shelter operations and improvements to living conditions. Coordination and Collaboration : Coordination with relevant agencies and organizations; provision of disaster relief expertise. The donations raised will be put to work immediately for urgent emergency relief and rebuilding efforts. Because circumstances on the ground evolve rapidly as assessments continue, our operational plans will adapt dynamically to local needs. I ask for your support to send back some of the love and care that was poured into me so that my neighbors, former-students, and now their children, can regain a sense of safety and stability as quickly as possible.

Last week a devastating earthquake struck my "hometown" in Japan. For my birthday this year I am sending back some of the love and care that was poured into me as a young adult. Please join me and support this community.
