"Pacific Island Food Revolution is a crusade to revitalize indigenous foodways in the guise of a genial cooking show." New York Times, November 2020
Pacific Island Food Revolution is a multi-media TV-led social movement in the Pacific Islands designed as a response to an emerging duocrisis - the skyrocketing rates of Non Communicable Diseases, and the Climate Crisis.
The NCD rates have ballooned alongside a two-generational shift in eating patterns. People have gone from eating local, nutritious, and delicious foods to a heavily marketed processed food diet.
The climate crisis is deeply interlinked with Pacific food systems and food choices. Simply put, imported processed foods, with a heavy carbon footprint due to associated travel and industrial production methods, create emissions. Locally grown crops sequester carbon, have no associated food miles, and are generally more climate resilient.
"It seems that planetary health and human health are one and the same, and they intersect on the plate!"
The key to good health is right in the Pacific backyard, in its markets, in its farms, and in the rustic dishes that Pacific grandmothers still cook. The answer lies in local cuisine.
Founded in 2018, Pacific Island Food Revolution quickly captured the Pacific heart. Built as an energetic and good natured cooking competition show between Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu and the Kingdom of Tonga, showcasing cutural dishes put together easily and affordably for the modern era, the audience related to seeing people “ just like them” on the screen and emotionally resonated with the implict message that was built into the projects DNA- your culture is your cure.
