Help young South Africans excel in mathematics!

Numeric is on a mission to help young South Africans excel in mathematics by providing after-school mathematics interventions to primary school children and training high-quality maths teachers for the South African public school system. With just 4 out of every 100 learners leaving the South African schooling system with a 50% pass in mathematics, South Africa is not producing the doctors, scientists, engineers it needs to build a thriving and stable civil society. With the average score on the Grade 9 annual national assessments in mathematics sitting at 11%, it has become clear that maths education is broken well before learners reach Grade 9. The Solution We approach the crisis in maths education in two ways – through learner interventions at the primary school level and by recruiting talented young South Africans into the teaching profession and providing them with the training they need to become high quality maths teachers. Learner interventions We have developed a low-cost, scalable model for the delivery of high quality maths programs in township areas. We currently operate in 42 schools across Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Mitchells Plain and Soweto, and cater to over 2,200 learners on a weekly basis. If you would like to make a financial contribution, you can help us by sponsoring one of the following:
$20: Workbooks for 10 learners $50: Stationery for one classroom $150: An end of year prizegiving $250: Sponsor a learner for one year
$6250: Sponsor a class of learners for one year
Donors who sponsor 5 or more learners will receive the names and ages of sponsored learners, as well as periodic progress updates. Teacher Training The core of our business is to run after-school programs in mathematics and to use these programs to provide teaching internships to pre-service mathematics teachers. The majority of our interns are Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) students who are currently enrolled at universities including the UJ, WITS, UWC, and CPUT. The internship we provide is composed of a two-week training boot-camp in December, followed by allocation of a classroom of 25 learners with whom the intern will meet twice a week throughout the following year and with whom they will implement a rigorous curriculum in arithmetic and pre-algebra. Interns receive ongoing mentorship from our team of program managers as well as fortnightly training to strengthen their mathematics content and pedagogy. The end result is student teachers who are significantly more confident, well-equipped and motivated to enter the classroom upon completion of their B.Ed degrees.
