Liminal Works - For Collective Liberation

Urban Peace Movement is an Oakland, CA based racial justice organization focussed on youth organizing and leadership development. 

Urban Peace Movement (UPM) was founded in 2009 to build youth leadership in Oakland/Alameda County to transform the social conditions that drive violence and mass incarceration in low-income communities of color. UPM envisions a world where youth of color are resilient and self-determined. Since its inception, UPM has served Alameda County communities of color through organizing, community building, healing events, and outreach. The organization’s work is designed with a deep understanding of these communities; in which their leadership/staff live and serve. UPM improves community well-being through:

1. **Youth Leadership Development:** UPM’s model of Healing-Centered Youth Organizing supports youth to increase their wellness and heal from trauma while empowering them to organize for positive community change.  UPM runs two youth leadership programs, the Determination Black Men’s Group and Leaders in Training program, across Alameda County for low-income/systems-impacted youth of color ages 14-26. 

2. **Community Healing:** UPM’s community healing work increases access to culturally-relevant mental health and healing resources and builds community belonging in Oakland/East Bay communities of color. UPM does this through healing and wellness festivals, healing circles, grief support circles, community vigils, and intensive case conferencing/service referrals for directly-impacted individuals including to mental health, housing, job placement, education, and childcare services. 

3. **Reimagining Safety and Justice:** UPM builds social change campaigns advocating for policies that create community-based alternatives to incarceration and real safety for youth of color and their families. UPM seeks an end to youth incarceration and reallocation of resources towards building blocks of well-being: healthcare, education, mental health treatment, etc.

Our founder's family has spent much time at UVA Children’s Hospital (and Boston Children's Hospital) when their daughter, Lily, was little and fighting for her life. **Inflammation in your brain can strike at the very core of who you are— impacting how you think, feel, move, and act.** Brain inflammation, or neuroinflammation, occurs when the immune system’s inflammatory response affects the brain, nervous system, or spinal cord.

Inflammation, or the inflammatory process, is part of your immune system’s normal reaction to an illness, infection, or injury. It can be caused by viruses, infections, injuries, or even allergies. Inflammation typically resolves when the infection clears, the injury heals, or when you avoid contact with the allergen.

**For some people, this process triggers an endless loop of neuroinflammation and debilitating symptoms like:**

- **Extreme fatigue**
- **Brain fog**
- **Severe sleep issues**
- **Dramatic mood or behavior changes**

We aim to advance the mental wellbeing of our South Asian community.

In 2021, during their freshman year of college, our founders Ravi Parekh and Aaron Pandian suffered the loss of their close friend and roommate, Farhan, in a tragic murder-suicide where he took the lives of himself and his family. 

Farhan was struggling with a variety of inadequately treated mental illnesses. However, like so many members of the South Asian-American community, his parents simply lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing him the care he needed.

They recognized that, as an immigrant South Asian family, they lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing Farhan the care he needed. The tragedy of Farhan and his family revealed that there are many mental health issues unique to the cultural characteristics of South Asians. Understanding that these environmental factors and structural barriers to effective care created the situation which led to this tragedy, we theorized a youth-led grass-roots advocacy and education initiative that equips South Asian youth and other interested parties with access to tools and resources to understand, process, and empower.

Grass-roots efforts are often inspired by lived experiences. Our passion and drive to bridge the gaps in mental health care for South Asian individuals stem from our lived experiences.

Knowledge is empowering, and part of understanding mental health is to both learn and express empathy for those affected who are unable to receive effective care. To learn not to fear mental illness as a sibling, parent, friend, significant other, or affected individual and employ newly acquired tools that work to connect with the resources they need. 

MHISA embodies these ideals and provides us an outlet to engage those around us with a shared goal: to enable South Asians struggling with mental illness to lead better and healthful lives.

Chiedza provides access to education , protection, health, nutrition and economic empowerment services to orphans, vulnerable children and young people since 2001. The activities include early childhood education, second chance education for children out of school, vocational training for young people and formal tertiary education. For protection services, we facilitate birth registration, conduct positive parenting sessions and prevention and management of abuse cases. We ensure the well being of children and young people through support groups for children living with HIV, providing hot meals, dry food packs and nutrition training for caregivers. The parents are engaged in various income generating activities to help them boost household incomes.

Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) co-founders George Leonard and Michael Murphy believed each of us possesses a “vast, untapped potential to learn, to love, to feel deeply, and to create.” Inspired by this belief, they laid the groundwork for a transformative program that would awaken us to our true and full potential.

Esalen Institute became the seedbed for their ideas in the 1960s, and would serve as the foundation for ITP’s integral and long-term approach. From the initial experiments at Esalen, to the first official practice group founded in 1992, ITP continues to evolve to help practitioners achieve long-term goals for realizing positive and healthy transformation of body, mind, heart and soul.

ITP is a community of inclusive and dedicated practitioners who value the benefits of long-term practice. We encourage practitioners to cultivate their own worldviews and beliefs, free from dogma or guru-led practices. ITP is guided by multiple teachers and practices aimed at inspiring healthy transformation over time.

Officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2005, ITP International (ITPI) acts as a steward to advance the education and research of the practice, as well as offer ongoing support to our ITP members on this transformative journey.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.

In over 70 countries around the world, MSF saves lives by providing medical aid where it is needed most—in armed conflicts, epidemics, natural disasters, and other crises.  The people who work for MSF are doctors, nurses, midwives, epidemiologists, water-and-sanitation experts and many others who combine their professional expertise with a commitment to the world’s most vulnerable people.  Each year, these medical teams run close to 470 projects where they care for millions of people.  

As an organization, MSF is neutral and operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. It does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care based on needs alone, and advocates for increased independent access to victims of conflict and disaster as required under international humanitarian law. Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs, aiming to fill gaps that exist (rather than replicating services that are already offered) or reach communities that are not being assisted.  Over the years, the organization has been the recipient of several awards that recognize its work, including the 1998 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2012 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, the 2015 Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award, and the 2017 Pardes Humanitarian Prize for Mental Health.

Hogar de Cristo USA is a 501c3 nonprofit focused on Chile's poverty. Based in Pompano Beach, FL received its status in 2007.

**Hogar de Cristo** welcomes the poorest of the poor with love and dignity to expand their opportunities for a better life in Chile. It enthusiastically supports the community in its responsibility to those discriminated against in our society. Inspired by the spirit of its founder, Alberto Hurtado SJ, it's a transparent, efficient, and effective organization that promotes a culture of respect, justice, and unity.

**For 80 years,** the **Hogar de Cristo Foundation has worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, transforming vulnerable lives and integrating them into society.**

Delivering mobile-based rehabilitation programs to treat COPD, making treatment accessible in areas where it is currently lacking.

**Overview**
Respira Health is developing a free, mobile-based pulmonary rehabilitation program to close the treatment gap for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - India’s second leading cause of death. Incubated in March 2025 through Ambitious Impact’s Charity Entrepreneurship Program, we are in the early stages of building a scalable, cost-effective model for delivery across low-resource settings.

**The Problem**
COPD is the fourth leading cause of death globally, responsible for over 3 million deaths annually. Critically, 90% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where limited healthcare capacity and logistical challenges prevent patients from accessing effective treatment. In India, this treatment gap is especially pronounced, despite the availability of proven interventions.

**Our Solution**
Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a well-established intervention combining strength and cardio exercises, breathing techniques, lifestyle support (e.g., smoking cessation), and psychological care. Research shows that just three PR sessions can reduce the risk of death by 9%. Digital delivery of PR via mobile phones or web platforms has been shown to be as effective as in-person programs, but at a fraction of the cost. Respira Health is adapting existing PR content into a mobile-first format accessible via widely used platforms like WhatsApp to ensure it reaches underserved COPD patients across India.

**Current Activities**
We are conducting scoping visits in Mumbai and Delhi from July - September 2025. Our objectives are to:

- Understand the burden of COPD and the broader healthcare landscape.
- Conduct needs assessments with healthcare workers and patients.
- Test key assumptions around digital platform usability, referral pathways, and patient adherence.
- Build relationships with potential collaborators for future pilot implementation.

**Future Plans**
Upon completion of our proof-of-concept phase, we will fundraise for a pilot launch. Our primary goal for Year 1 is to demonstrate uptake, engagement, and adherence in low-resource communities, paving the way for scale-up in 2026.

**Impact Potential**
Our intervention could provide millions of COPD patients with access to life-extending care currently out of reach. By leveraging digital tools, we aim to overcome traditional delivery barriers and radically expand access to pulmonary rehabilitation. We estimate that the average patient completing our program will gain over six months of healthy life. Based on our cost modelling, we anticipate averting a disability-adjusted life year (DALY) for just $20 - making our intervention potentially five times more cost-effective than GiveWell’s funding bar for highly cost-effective charities.

The cultivation, use, and trade of psychoactive substances — including psychedelics — has been a consistent aspect of human history, but prohibition, criminalization, and militarization — and their inherent oppression — have led to drastic consequences. The ongoing, global War on Drugs has been justified by bad science, racism, and fear for too long: it has led to mass incarceration; erosion of civil liberties; ecological damage; economic waste; and the public health polycrisis of adulteration, poisoning, and overdose. Many of these harmful effects have disproportionately impacted the most historically exploited and oppressed communities. Consequently, we believe societies worldwide have an obligation to account for and repair those harms, to the extent possible.
