Magic City Harvest (MCH) was founded in 1990 with a simple yet powerful mission: to bridge the gap between abundance and need by rescuing surplus perishable food and delivering it to those in need. For over three decades, MCH has served as a vital link between businesses with surplus food and agencies on the frontlines of hunger relief. What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a trusted community nonprofit that, in 2024 alone, provided more than 871,000 meals to individuals and families across Jefferson County.
The need for our services is greater than ever. In Jefferson County, more than 112,000 people are facing hunger, and this number continues to increase as the cost of living increases and wages fail to keep pace with inflation. Many families who were once able to make ends meet are now struggling to keep food on the table. Our partner agencies—shelters, food pantries, and community programs—consistently report that they are seeing more people walk through their doors asking for help. At the same time, federal safety nets such as SNAP benefits are being reduced, creating additional gaps that community-based organizations must fill.
Food insecurity has devastating effects on families. Parents are forced to make impossible choices between paying rent, covering medical bills, and buying groceries. Children arrive at school hungry, impacting their ability to focus and learn. Seniors on fixed incomes often skip meals so they can afford necessary medications. Hunger not only weakens bodies—it strains mental health, family stability, and community resilience. MCH works every day to ensure that food insecurity is not a barrier to health, dignity, and opportunity.
