Justdiggit is on a mission to inspire millions to take action to regreen degraded landscapes in Sub-Saharan Africa.

More than ever, we are out of balance with nature. The Earth is warming, leading to water and food scarcity, poverty, biodiversity loss and climate refugees.

Luckily, there is a solution! With the help of so-called nature-based solutions to restore land. Besides sequestering CO2 out of the air, applying nature-based solutions also improves the quality of life, restores ecosystems and creates more water and food security. But we need to take action now.

That’s why at Justdiggit, we are on a mission to bring back nature and regreen Sub-Saharan African landscapes.

Together with local partners and communities, Justdiggit jumpstarts regreening projects that regenerate vegetation. Bringing back nature helps to preserve biodiversity, improve livelihoods and positively impact climate change.

Additionally, we create global awareness on these simple landscape restoration solutions and use the power of communication and (mobile) technology to scale up the regreening process.

THE TECHNIQUES

To restore ecosystems and regreen vast landscapes, we implement large-scale projects focused on bunds (water-harvesting earthworks) and Treecovery (rapid tree restoration). Bunds are semi-circular holes in the ground that capture rainwater, and Treecovery is a method to bring back trees quickly and sustainably. Our bund projects are mostly active in Kenya. In Tanzania and Senegal, we mainly focus on Treecovery. In addition, we use other nature-based solutions such as grass seed banks, grazing management, water harvesting trenches and more. You can learn more about these techniques on our website.

THE BENEFITS

Bringing back vegetation to degraded and dry land has massive and overarching benefits for people, animals and nature. It positively impacts families and communities that depend on fertile land, ecosystems, biodiversity, and, done on a large enough scale, even our climate. With our work, we touch upon 9 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You can read more about those here.

MAKING AN IMPACT FOR THE PLANET

In our regreening projects, we combine accessible and cost-effective and natural regreening techniques with data, communication and (mobile) technology. This means that our projects are not only sustainable but also uniquely scalable. Together with Kenyan and Tanzanian farmers and pastoralists, we have already made lots of impact! Over 660,000 bunds have been dug, over 23.2 million trees have been brought back, and in total we have brought over 475,000 hectares of land under restoration!

BECOME A PARTNER

Companies and their employees can directly support Justdiggit’s regreening work by funding tangible, high-impact solutions on the ground. A donation of just €8 restores one bund, which regreens 124 m² of dry and degraded land in Africa and retains 2,100 litres of water when it rains. Let’s start cooling down our planet together!
