Founded in 2011, Human Rights Educators USA (HRE USA) is a growing network dedicated to building a culture of human rights by providing an innovative forum for HRE practitioners and supporters to learn, network, and exchange professional expertise and better serve the HRE community.

HRE USA is guided by the core human rights principles of human dignity, equality, and non-discrimination, within the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We believe that effective human rights education is transformative: it empowers individuals and communities and promotes the respect for and embodiment of these values in daily life.

To fulfill our mission, we work alongside our members and partners to build a national movement for human rights education, advocate for the integration of international human rights standards into educational systems and promote supportive national and regional policies. We aim to embed human rights education in curricula, teacher training, and pedagogy by developing resources for educators and contributing to research in the field.

To learn more about our mission, our strategic priorities, and how human rights education fuels broader social justice efforts, visit(https://hreusa.org)hreusa.org. You can also follow us on social media for the latest updates on our projects, events, and community initiatives.

If you believe in the power of education to advance justice and equity, please consider making a donation today. Your support helps us train the next generation of human rights leaders and expand the reach of human rights education across the country.

Kirby Edmonds Fellowship 2027

We are proud to launch the Kirby Edmonds Fellowship Campaign , one of our most important fundraisers of the year. Centered around the theme "Amplifying Youth Voices for Justice and Education," this campaign reflects our belief that young leaders don't just represent the future of human rights advocacy; they are already leading it today. The campaign supports the Kirby Edmonds Summer Fellowships , created to honor the remarkable legacy of Kirby Edmonds, a founding member of Human Rights Educators USA and a lifelong advocate for social justice. In his honor, these fellowships prepare the next generation of human rights educators, equipping them with the skills to amplify their voices and shape the movement toward a more just and equitable tomorrow. Your donation will go directly toward funding the training and mentorship of Edmonds Fellows for Summer 2027. Each fellowship costs us $1,500. This year, we are proud to support four Edmonds Fellows, and with your help, we hope to amplify even more youth voices next year. Donate now!

2026-27 Training As Action Series

Human Rights Educators USA works to support its network members through professional development opportunities. One of the most extensive HRE USA learning opportunities is through our Training As Action Series (TAAS), now in its fourth year. Human Rights Educators USA’s annual TAAS  is a virtual training series focused on bridging personal and collective action on the critical human rights issues of today. TAAS creates an educational space to connect and collaborate with others in human rights education and training. It also gives participants the skills, resources, and tools needed to take action on human rights issues in their communities. The 2026-27 Training as Action Series will center on the theme:** “Voices for Justice: Human Rights, Civic Action, and Creative Resistance” This year’s sessions will explore how human rights education can equip individuals and communities to navigate and respond to today’s most pressing civic challenges. Topics will include misinformation and media literacy, protest and civic participation rights, digital surveillance, climate justice, teaching in polarized contexts, and inclusive, community-rooted strategies for democratic engagement. The series will continue to highlight youth and grassroots leadership while offering practical tools for educators, advocates, and organizers working at the intersection of rights and civic action. Become a co-sponsor  today and help support the 2026-27 series. All co-sponsors will have the opportunity to have their organization’s logo displayed on promotional materials. You can donate through the link above, request an invoice, or write a check made out to the Center for Transformative Action and mailed to The Center for Transformative Action, Attn: HRE USA, P.O. Box 760, Ithaca, NY. For more information, contact kristi@hreusa.org .
