Less than 4 percent of the USD 500 billion in annual global renewable energy investment reaches the approximately 450 million people living without electricity in fragile, conflict-affected countries. Energy Peace Partners (EPP) is a nonprofit built on the idea that investing in renewable energy in fragile and conflict-affected settings can support positive social, economic, and environmental outcomes that contribute to building more peaceful, stable societies. EPP developed the Peace Renewable Energy Credit (P-REC) as a way to channel more private investment to clean energy projects in conflict-affected settings, by adapting an existing investment mechanism - the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC). When companies procure P-RECs to support their environment and social impact goals, the revenue goes to local renewable energy developers working to expand clean electricity access in EPP’s target countries.
To date, P-RECs have unlocked over $1.25 million for transformative projects in Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia, and South Sudan, contributing to first-time electrification, public street lighting, agricultural productive use hubs, and hospital electrification, collectively benefitting over 215,000 people. P-REC buyers include corporate leaders such as Microsoft, Google, and Block, among others. EPP plans to launch a new finance facility that will help grow the P-REC market, and over the next 5 years will unlock USD 90 million for new renewable energy projects in 14 fragile countries, and connect an additional 1 million people to first-time electricity.
