Code Read’s ultimate goal is to give children an equal opportunity to increase their academic growth through reading. We do this by providing free recreational books to children in low-income communities in Los Angeles County. By providing books to children who would otherwise not be able to afford them, Code Read increases literacy and fosters a lifetime love of reading.
Code Read provides new books to students in Title 1 elementary schools in Los Angeles County school districts through a 6 to 8-week program. The Code Read program begins with a kickoff assembly at the school, creating excitement and enthusiasm for reading. Teachers then set academic goals for each of their students, based on the student’s needs and abilities. Over the next 6-8 weeks, students “earn” books, tracking their progress towards their unique goals using a reward chart. At the end of the program, Code Read returns to the school and hosts a free book fair, where every student gets to select two books, a bookbag and a bookmark to take home. Code Read has a significant impact on children’s academic and literacy outcomes, with teachers reporting that after participating in Code Read:
● 100% of students have a greater love for reading
● 80% of students have improved literacy levels
● 75% of students are more attentive and eager to learn
Code Read also serves families in transitional housing and foster youth by setting up free book distributions in partnership with Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Los Angeles Family Housing and Children’s Bureau.
