Founded in 1969, College of the Atlantic is the first and only college where every student designs a self-directed major in human ecology—the study of the systems that connect people and place. Our interdisciplinary, action-oriented approach prepares students to address complex global challenges through collaboration, creativity, and sustained inquiry.

Human ecology is more than way of studying—it’s a mindset. Students at COA don’t choose from predefined departments. Instead, they build a personalized program that blends science, art, humanities, policy, design, and practice. The goal: connect ideas, communities, and ecosystems in ways that spark real change.

From sustainable farms to remote island research stations, your classroom extends far beyond four walls. You might be launching a nonprofit, building a composting toilet, mapping seabird migration, or designing a climate justice campaign. Students turn knowledge into practice every day.
