Powerful general-purpose AI systems are being rapidly developed by privately held for-profit companies. Considering that this technology will greatly impact the future of humanity, it is vital that we consider how AI is being developed, by whom, and for whom. These technologies will not be beneficial by default, and thus we must work to ensure their beneficence.
