The African Foundation for Development (AFFORD), mobilizes the financial, intellectual, and political assets of the African diaspora and channels them to drive economic growth and social development in Africa. It also enhances the capacity of actual and potential investors and actively influences international policies to ensure that they address the real needs and root causes of underdevelopment and poverty on the continent.
Established in 1994 by Chukwu-Emeka Chiekezie and Nicholas Atampugre, AFFORD has been at the forefront of championing diaspora activism and causes. With a mission ‘to enhance and expand diaspora contributions to Africa’s development’, AFFORD is globally celebrated as a pioneer and innovator in the field of policy and practice of ‘diaspora and development’. It acts as a catalyst and exemplar in the sector – in its advocacy work contributing to UK and international recognition of the role of the diaspora, and in the subsequent initiation of new policies, programs, funds and schemes. These initiatives have so far directly unlocked over £100 million for diaspora causes and activities.
