AFIEGO was established in 2009 by four university students with the main aim to promote justice for the poor who were being affected by energy and other related projects.

Our visn remains: A society that equitably uses clean energy resources for socio-economic development and our mission is to promote energy policies that benefit poor and vulnerable communities.

Since its formation in 2009, AFIEGO has implemented many activities including the following:

  1. Founding the Publish What You Pay Uganda Chapter,
  2. Initiated the EITI advocacy work in Uganda,
  3. Supported over 7,000 people who were displaced by the refinery project in 2012 to negotiate their compensation. There are still cases in the High Court of Uganda trying to ensure that all the victims of the refinery get justice.
  4. Currently we are implementing projects to stop the oil exploitation in Uganda, promote energy transition, conservation of forests in the oil region, promoting electricity diversification, promoting food security amidst oil dangers, a project to fight against climate change impacts and we are also empowering youth against oil activities.
  5. We also have projects where we are prosecuting 7 cases in different courts including the East African Court of Justice, High Court of Uganda, Uganda;s court of appeal and the French court in France.

We are planning to continue filing court cases for oil affected people, presenting proposals to the ministry energy to put in place a solar consumer protection law, an off-grid solar policy, reduce power tariffs, educate communities on the dangers of climate change, we are members of do not gas Africa efforts, we are members of make big polluters pay, we ae co-founder and host of IGEN-EA and many other efforts.
We have a number of donors who support our work including:
