Education, Protection & Opportunities for Afghan Children

The project improves access to safe and inclusive education for vulnerable children in rural communities in Balkh Province, northern Afghanistan. The province is predominantly rural, and agriculture remains the main source of income for many families. Despite existing economic potential, more than 65% of the population lives below the poverty line. The project supports six public schools and establishes twelve community-based learning centers, reaching approximately 4,840 students in schools and 720 children and adolescents through alternative learning opportunities.

In addition, children receive psychosocial support, while mothers are supported in developing income-generating activities, helping to strengthen household resilience.

Even before the Taliban takeover, tens of thousands of school-age children were not enrolled in school and had never received formal education.

Following the exclusion of girls from secondary education and the return of many families from Pakistan and Iran, the number of out-of-school children has increased significantly. At the same time, alternative educational opportunities in communities remain extremely limited.

Implemented in partnership with our long-standing local partner, the OHW, the initiative rehabilitates school infrastructure, improves access to water and sanitation facilities, strengthens teaching capacities, and creates protective learning environments.

From the outset, parents, community members, schools, and local authorities are actively involved in the project to ensure local ownership and long-term sustainability. By combining education, protection, and livelihood support, the project contributes to sustainable opportunities and greater stability for children and families in the targeted communities.
