Based in Newton, Massachusetts, The Second Step provides free, trauma-informed services for survivors of domestic violence throughout Greater Boston and beyond. We are dedicated to ending the cycle of abuse with our wraparound support, including safety planning, legal services, counseling, housing stabilization, support groups, and community education. These services help survivors heal and thrive while raising awareness to prevent abuse and build healthier communities.
Since 1992, The Second Step has been a trusted resource for survivors of intimate partner violence. In 2024, we served over 400 families, helping break the cycle of abuse for over 600 children. Legal Services: Staff attorneys provide life-changing legal services to survivors, including representation in court for restraining orders, child custody and support, and divorce. We help survivors navigate legal issues vital to their safety and the safety of their families. Intervention & Advocacy: Domestic Violence Advocates provide extensive services to survivors in our community, including safety planning and crisis intervention, advocacy, emotional support, court accompaniment, support groups, domestic violence education and connection to resources to help them find safety, build skills, develop resilience, and heal from trauma. Prevention Education: Our educators deliver targeted outreach, training, and educational workshops to proactively reduce the occurrence of abuse and build healthier communities.
Our unique approach integrates mental health support and case management with legal representation to maximize the effectiveness of our interventions, prevent further harm and help stabilize survivors. We also provide prevention education to address the root causes of violence, foster awareness, and equip individuals with tools to recognize and prevent abuse.
