Stellar Dreams: 100 Telescopes for Low-Income Black Families

Welcome to The Stellar Dreams Initiative, a mission close to our hearts at The Science Haven. As an organization, we are committed to fostering curiosity, encouraging passion for science, and making the mysteries of the universe accessible to everyone, regardless of socio-economic background.

Our current project is to gift 100 beginner-friendly telescopes to Black families across the U.S.A. Each telescope, priced at about $100, represents a significant expense for low-income families, but we see it as an invaluable investment in the future of science and exploration for young minds! We know that astronomy is often a gateway to other sciences such as physics, math, biology, geology, chemistry-- the possibilities are endless, and the sky surely is NOT the limit!

Every member of The Science Haven's board, including our Executive Director Dr. Raven Baxter, was raised in a single-parent household. This initiative deeply resonates with us, as we've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of curiosity and the importance of equitable access to educational resources.

In addition to gifting the telescopes, we plan to conduct workshops led by our Director of Programs, NASA Theoretical Astrophysicist Dr. Ronald Gamble, Jr. In this program within our initiative, parents and their accompanying youth will learn how to assemble and operate their telescopes, and view the night sky under the enthusiastic guidance of experts in the astronomy field. This collaborative effort aims to make science more accessible and engaging for all participants.

Our key focus areas are Washington, DC; Los Angeles, CA; Buffalo, NY; as well as virtual engagement with families outside of those cities. The Science Haven is planning ahead for a rare total solar eclipse on April 8th next year! Buffalo, one of our key distribution locations, will be right in the center of the path. We're collaborating with the Buffalo, NY community to hold a viewing event. One of our goals in gifting telescopes in Buffalo is to prime families' engagement with this exceptional event, sparking interest well ahead of time.

We believe that with your support, we can significantly amplify our efforts and make a lasting impact on the future of science education. Join us as we gift not just telescopes, but universes of possibilities to these young minds. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to dream big, reach for the stars, and be part of the cosmic conversation. Thank you for your generosity and support!
