The Motor Neurone Disease Association of South Africa (MNDA SA) is the only national non-profit organisation dedicated exclusively to supporting people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND/ALS) and their families across South Africa.
Founded over 25 years ago, MNDA SA was established to address the significant gaps in care, information, and coordinated support experienced by individuals diagnosed with MND in a resource-constrained healthcare system. The organisation works alongside families from diagnosis through all stages of the disease, with a strong focus on dignity, informed decision-making, and quality of life.
MNDA SA's mission is to ensure that no person living with MND or their family faces the journey alone. The organisation provides compassionate, practical, and accessible support through a national network of trained Lay Advisors, supported by clinical coordination and professional oversight. Services include care coordination, disease education, psychosocial support, equipment guidance and access, and navigation of complex healthcare and social systems.
Current activities include first-contact support following diagnosis, ongoing follow-up with families, coordination with healthcare professionals, facilitation of referrals to appropriate services, and education for both families and clinicians. MNDA SA also plays an important advocacy role, raising awareness of MND in South Africa and contributing to improved understanding of the condition among healthcare providers and the public.
Looking ahead, MNDA SA aims to strengthen and expand its national support model by increasing advisor capacity, improving access to assistive devices, enhancing education for healthcare professionals, and developing sustainable funding streams to ensure long-term impact. The organisation is committed to building partnerships locally and internationally to improve outcomes for people living with MND in South Africa.
