LEAF Kenya is an emerging environmental organization protecting and restoring threatened limestone forests and coastal ecosystems in Kilifi County, part of the Eastern Africa Coastal Forest Biodiversity Hotspot. These ecosystems support critically endangered species and provide water regulation, coastal protection, and cultural identity, but face deforestation, climate change, and unsustainable land use.

From 2021–2023, with support from Fondation Franklinia and BGCI Africa, LEAF established ex-situ collections of 264 native tree species, including 34 threatened species, at Pwani University. The organization contributed to conservation action plans, socio-economic studies, and propagation research, successfully cultivating species previously considered difficult to grow.

LEAF has initiated in-situ restoration at 5 limestone forest sites including Chasimba and Pangani, establishing nurseries and planting about 10,000 trees, including 10 threatened species, since 2022. Local Giriama and Mijikenda community members lead nursery operations, seed collection, and forest patrols, creating income and fostering stewardship.

Since 2022, LEAF has planted over 400,000 mangroves in degraded coastal areas, supporting climate resilience, preventing erosion, and revitalizing fish nurseries. Sixty local people earn direct income, while thousands benefit indirectly from healthier ecosystems.

LEAF runs an environmental outreach program that has reached over 20 schools and more than 10,000 students across Kilifi County, building awareness of local environmental challenges and empowering youth to take action.

LEAF Kenya's future vision is to expand restoration efforts, introduce regenerative agriculture and ecotourism, and create the 'Kaya Route' green corridor connecting coastal forests. Through strong community partnerships, LEAF is building a resilient future where people, nature, and green livelihoods grow together.
