Overview

The Humane League has been consistently recognized as one of the most effective animal organizations worldwide. Together with our community of Changemakers, we’ve pushed the world’s biggest food companies to change how they treat animals, helped pass and defend landmark protections in court, and powered a global coalition strong enough to win fights country by country.

WHAT WE DO

At The Humane League, we transform systems. We have a clear plan to dismantle factory farming—one strategic intervention at a time. Our approach combines:

Corporate Campaigns: Negotiating with and holding giant food companies accountable to transform industry standards.

Policy Reforms: Working to enshrine vital animal protections into law.

Global Movement Building: Powering a coalition that spans more than 70 countries to amplify our collective impact.

When we target a cruel practice—like confining hens in cages so small they can’t spread their wings—we deploy all these tools simultaneously to create unstoppable momentum for animals.

OUR IMPACT & COMMUNITY

Factory farming causes more animal suffering than anything else on Earth. We’re working to end it—and we’re winning. Our international campaigns are expanding rapidly, driving change across Latin America, Europe, and Asia, and sparing hundreds of millions of animals from the worst miseries of intensive confinement.

HOW WE CREATE CHANGE FOR ANIMALS

Transforming Industry Standards

When companies put profits over animal welfare, we hold them accountable. Our corporate campaigns have persuaded the world's largest food companies—from McDonald's to Starbucks to Conagra—to pledge to eliminate their cruelest practices. And we don't stop at promises. Through relentless pressure and negotiation, we ensure commitments become reality. Already, we’ve helped increase the percentage of hens free from cages from just 2% to nearly 50% in the US alone—and with thousands of corporate commitments due in 2025, we’re pushing hard for follow-through.

Enshrining Protections Into Law

Corporate commitments aren’t enough. That’s why we fight to make these changes permanent through legislation. Through the Animal Policy Alliance, we unite 30+ local advocacy groups to secure legal protections for animals. We’ve helped pass the strongest animal protection laws in US history—and successfully defended them all the way to the Supreme Court. When voters have the chance to ban cruel factory farming practices, they overwhelmingly vote yes.

Maximizing Every Dollar

We’re committed to using our donors’ dollars as strategically and wisely as possible. Because we simply don’t have the resources to compete with well-heeled corporations and lobbies, we must do as much good as we can for animals with every dollar that we have—so that together we can make the greatest possible impact. According to our best cost-effectiveness estimates, we spend just 50 cents to spare one hen from a life of misery in a cage. You can be confident that your gift will be used efficiently to bring about real, tangible change for as many animals as possible.

Building Global Power

Real change happens through collective action. That’s why we founded the Open Wing Alliance—uniting 90+ organizations across 70 countries in the fight to protect animals. We provide grants, training, and strategic guidance that transform local advocacy into global power. While industrial agriculture spends billions maintaining the status quo, we achieve landmark victories through the exponential power of collaboration. Together, we’re creating a movement no company or country can ignore.

Because of our high standard of effectiveness, THL has consistently been recognized by Animal Charity Evaluators as one of the most impactful animal charities in the world. We share these victories with our ever-expanding base of incredible volunteers and supporters. Factory farming’s days are numbered, but only if we keep fighting together. Thank you for standing with us and powering this historic change for animals.

Aric & Arden's Wedding Donations

We are so psyched to dance and celebrate with all of you! Our wedding happens to be the week of Giving Tuesday. In lieu of wedding gifts, we've set up this donation link for one of the charities we most admire. (The Humane League is one of the most effective organizations we know of for reducing the suffering of farmed animals. You can read more about their work here .) We'd be thrilled if you considered donating. And if there's a different donation opportunity you strongly want to support this year, we very much encourage you to give to that instead! Also, if you really want to blow us away: you could consider signing a Giving What We Can pledge . We're both 🔸10% Pledgers, and it's been a fun and meaningful part of our lives for years now.

Multi-Charity Fundraiser with Matching

I found out about every.org when they ran a site-wide donation matching program a while ago. I appreciated the idea of being able to leverage my own giving that way and found the site to be trustworthy and easy to use. I have a hypothesis that when multiple charities are sharing one pool of matching funds, it creates an additional incentive for donors to participate. So I'm sponsoring one myself and inviting some friends to give. And any visitors who stop by this page are most welcome to join in! I've chosen six charities for a "test drive" of this cool feature on every.org. These charities all have a good evidence base for being considered highly effective in some way, but it is difficult to compare them to one another apples-to-apples since they work on a diverse range of issues. There are several other charities that I am very excited about too, so please don't interpret this list as being my absolute favorites or top recommendations. The cheesy image I've chosen is from ChatGPT-5. In my defense, anything I drew myself would have looked worse! It is meant to convey a connection between Jesus Christ and the generous use of both our hearts and minds. Jesus inspired this fundraiser by encouraging us to love God and our neighbors, with all our hearts and all our minds, as He loved us. In the modern era, we have a lot of great charities to choose from, and a lot of evidence to draw upon in trying to be wise stewards of our resources. Note: I'm a board member of Christians for Impact and invite you to check out that website for more information, but this campaign is not an official project of that organization, just something I am trying out as an individual.

I believe that animals can suffer, and it seems pretty clear to me that the amount of suffering experienced by animals in factory farms is immense. I have so much respect for the work The Humane League does to mitigate (and maybe one day el...
