Our mission is dedicated to delivering life-saving services in Syria, neighboring countries and beyond. 

The Syrian American Medical Society Foundation (SAMS) is a non-political, non-religious global medical relief organization. SAMS is one of the most active and trusted international NGOs on the ground in Syria. 

Since 2011, SAMS has supported the healthcare needs of conflict-affected populations, delivering more than 28 million medical services free of charge to people in Syria and beyond. One year after the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Syria/Türkiye, SAMS continues to address the special health needs of earthquake survivors, including ongoing medical care, long-term physical therapy, rehabilitation, prosthetics, dialysis, and mental health services.  

Inside Syria, SAMS provides a full range of healthcare services, including emergency and trauma care, ICU services, reproductive healthcare, cancer treatment, mental health services, dialysis, physical rehabilitation, and much more. SAMS medical teams are delivering an average of 250,000 medical services per month, while also launching specialized medical missions, dispatching mobile medical clinics to displacement camps, training medical personnel, and delivering vital humanitarian aid to displaced families.

In addition to our work in Syria, SAMS is delivering essential medical care, free of charge to refugees and vulnerable populations in Türkiye, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Greece, Ukraine, and the USA, while also coordinating with partners to deliver humanitarian assistance and medical support to civilians in Gaza.

Started as 10-week walking challenge, 10 years ago, by 2 friends, GirlTrek is now a global movement of 1M+ Black women.

GirlTrek, the largest public health nonprofit for African-American women and girls in the United States. With nearly 100,000 neighborhood walkers, GirlTrek encourages women to use walking as a practical first step to inspire healthy living, families, and communities. As women organize walking teams, they mobilize community members to support monthly advocacy efforts and lead a civil rights-inspired health movement.

Beyond walking, GirlTrek’s active members support local and national policy to increase physical activity through walking, improve access to safe places to walk, protect and reclaim green spaces, and improve the walkability and built environments of 50 high-need communities across the United States.

With Partnership for a Healthier America, The Centers for Disease Control, Stanford Prevention Research Center, The American Council on Exercise, Safe Routes to School National Partnership, and The Sierra Club, GirlTrek has developed a world-class training for African-American women to serve as health professionals in the areas of fitness, mental health, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. GirlTrek’s mission is to inspire one million African-American women and girls to develop a daily habit of walking.

Health & Help assists people in places where it is difficult or impossible to access basic medical care. 

What do we do?

• Provide access to basic medical services and prescriptions.
• Hold educational lectures about health and ways to prevent illness in the
future.
• Prepare volunteers for their time on site at the clinics, as well as help all
employees learn and grow.
• Provide medical students with the opportunity to get hands-on experience
under the guidance of skilled doctors.
• Develop and implement medical programs on a continuous basis.

For whom?
• For unprotected and discriminated groups within the population.
• For those who cannot pay for treatment or buy medications because it is
too expensive or simply not available.
• For socially responsible, generous patrons, both private and corporate.
• For everyone who wants to become better versions of themselves by
helping others.

Where?
• In regions with limited resources and developing infrastructure
• In locations where medical care does not exist or is extremely
underdeveloped (lacking sufficient personnel, equipment, medicine).

How?
• About 70 volunteers from all over the world work for the project online. The
clinics have up to 20 medical specialists and volunteers in other professions from different countries working 24/7.
• Many generous people and companies from different countries around the world support the project through financial donations, and by providing medications, equipment, and other supplies.

Our Mission is to prevent, expose and stop child sexual abuse and help survivors heal worldwide. 

Stop the Silence® (formerly a free-standing non-profit) Stop the Silence®: Stop Child Sexual Abuse, Inc.) is a Department of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma committed to the prevention, treatment, and mitigation of child sexual abuse (CSA), other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and related interpersonal trauma. CSA occurs in overwhelming numbers in the U.S. and throughout the world and causes enormous havoc to the child and adolescent victims and the adult survivors. 

The Mission of the Stop the Silence® Department is to prevent, expose, and stop child sexual abuse as a part of other ACEs and help survivors heal worldwide. Our overarching goals are to: Prevent and expose CSA and ACEs; Promote healing of victims and survivors; Celebrate the lives of those healed; and, Underscore CSA/ACEs as a social justice and civil rights issues.

For 21 years, Stop the Silence® has provided comprehensive programming locally, nationally, and internationally toward the prevention and mitigation of CSA and ACEs through outreach (one-on-one, mass/social media), education, training, connecting the public to service providers through direct and electronic means, and policy development and reform to effect broad societal change. We provide help and resources through comprehensive programming with awareness, education/outreach, training, and policy development and reform. We work to address the relationships between childhood trauma and the broader issues of overall family and community violence, and violence within and between communities. Our focus underlines the importance of a shift in focus on positive development within our social complexes (e.g., the relationships between men, women, adults and children, cultural groups) to support peaceful - and to hinder violence-prone - relationships.

Founded by Pamela Pine, PhD, MPH, Stop the Silence® began in 2002 as a coalition of multi-ethnic and state groups that came together to comprehensively address child sexual abuse.  Faced with a lack of funding and awareness on the part of the public and policymakers alike, Dr. Pine organized the Race to Stop the Silence®, which continued as an annual event from 2004-2013.  

Pamela incorporated Stop the Silence® as a nonprofit organization in 2004 to collaboratively provide (e.g. with the Lamplighter Movement) comprehensive programming with research, media advocacy, training, community outreach and education, policy development, and support for direct services components. Pamela developed the Stop the Silence® comprehensive model used in the U.S and internationally. 

As of January 1, 2021, Stop the Silence® continues its vital work as a Department of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma.

The Safe Sisters Circle provides services for Black women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Washington DC.

The Safe Sisters Circle is a Black woman founded and led 501(c)3 that provides free, culturally specific, trauma informed, holistic services for Black women and girl survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Washington DC, with a focus on Wards 7 & 8.

Services provided include: legal advice and representation; short-term counseling; referral and case management; youth prevention workshops; and rideshare/groceries/housing gift cards.

ASH's vision is a world free from the harm caused by tobacco. 

ASH's mission is to advocate for innovative legal and policy measures to end the global tobacco epidemic. ASH takes action against the tobacco epidemic on a global scale. The tobacco industry does not limit itself to a geographic area, and neither can we. Our goal is to see U.S. tobacco control through a global lens, and to see global tobacco control through a U.S. lens.

ASH has 4 main programs of work including:

A human rights approach to tobacco control
Smoking negatively impacts the right to life, right to health, right to education, children’s rights, women’s rights, and many others. For example, the tobacco industry often targets their marketing to specific populations based on gender, race, sexual identity and age. Some of these group’s smoke at much higher rates than the general population, and they are all protected by various international and regional human rights treaties and instruments. 

Project Sunset to phase out the sale of commercial cigarettes
Project Sunset is an ASH-led global campaign to convince policy makers to phase out the sale of commercial combustible tobacco products. It is focused entirely on the sale, not individual possession, or use. The campaign includes efforts to address the social, political, and structural factors that sustain the smoking epidemic, in order to end it within a specified time period. Project Sunset reframes the conversation away from controlling death and disease to eliminating it.

Project Sunset is grounded in the understanding that the tobacco epidemic is caused by the actions of the tobacco industry. Nicotine is highly addictive, and cigarettes and other products have been engineered to be as addictive as possible. The majority of tobacco users became addicted as children, when consent was impossible. It is in part for this reason that the campaign is focused entirely on the tobacco industry and its products, not individual possession, or use. Governments have a human rights obligation when enacting endgame policies to ensure access to cessation resources and support for tobacco users.

Criminal Liability 
Tobacco products kill more people than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. Left unchecked, tobacco use will kill 1 billion people this century. As one state Supreme Court recently noted, cigarettes likely constitute “the most dangerous product lawfully sold” to consumers. The lethal consequences of smoking have been known to tobacco corporations for decades, yet they continue these activities, with full knowledge that millions of deaths will be caused by the ordinary use of cigarettes.

The concept of tobacco executives and/or corporations being held criminally responsible for these deaths has been explored from a legal theory view for years and may be able to move from theory to practice. There are several options of how to pursue criminal liability including but not limited to, a U.S prosecutor bringing charges against tobacco corporations or their executives, a foreign country charging a tobacco executive with a crime identical or similar to manslaughter, and charges under international human rights mechanisms such as a violation of the right to life or right to health, among many others.

Strengthening Best Practices in Global Tobacco Control
The World Health Organization estimates that tobacco consumption kills approximately 7 million people per year, and according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), tobacco costs the world up to two percent of its yearly GDP. In the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control, tobacco causes over 480,000 deaths and costs more than $300 billion a year.

The world has responded to this threat by developing and adopting a number of global mechanisms to help reduce tobacco at the local level including a global tobacco treaty, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which sets the global standard for best practices to reduce tobacco use such as tax and price measures, marketing and advertising bans, and protection from tobacco smoke; a U.N. General Assembly High-Level Meeting and Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) that calls for an accelerated implementation of the FCTC; a NCD Global Action Plan and a monitoring framework to address NCDs that stresses implementation of the FCTC and calls for a 30% reduction in tobacco use; and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which include FCTC implementation as a target and a tobacco indicator that all countries will report on. ASH is proud to have been involved in the development of these mechanisms and calls on all jurisdictions around the world to accelerate implementation of the measures in the FCTC.
