We are a philanthropic incubator (fiscal sponsor) for grassroots, community centered projects. We provide tools, guidance and services so that all Cascadians can develop and deliver solutions that meet the needs of their communities at all scales. We envision positive, place based action for an inclusive and unified Pacific Northwest with a recognizable culture of bioregional sustainability.

Since 2015 we have served over 40 grassroots project in every state in Cascadia! We currently have almost 20 projects focused on

Your charitable gift cultivates grassroots projects across the bioregion. Our projects are lead by hundreds of volunteers who put in thousands of hours a year to make Cascadia and the world a better place. North Cascades Institute's mission is to inspire environmental stewardship through transformative learning experiences in nature. 

North Cascades Institute envisions healthy Northwest ecosystems where all communities and species thrive. Since 1986, we have helped connect people, nature and community through the hands-on study of the natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest.

Our primary focus is the North Cascades ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest. Our goal is to help people of all ages experience and enjoy the mountains, rivers, forests, people and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest – so all will care for and protect this special place. 

Ecosystems thrive when communities have opportunities for meaningful experiences outdoors in nature, from a neighborhood garden to a national park. We have a shared responsibility to open the doors to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to ensure their outdoor experiences are powerful and rewarding. When people connect with nature, our communities are strengthened, nature is protected, and we all benefit.

We protect and steward threatened farmland, and keep land in production by making it accessible to a new generation of farmers.

Local farms are essential to our daily lives. Investing in Washington farmland means healthy food for our children, thriving rural economies, and fertile, productive soil. Simply put: farms make our communities better.

But the future of farming is threatened. Over the last four decades, some of Washington’s best soils have been irreversibly lost to development. In the next ten years, 70% of local growers will retire without a successor in place, and new farmers face countless barriers to accessing land, from affordability to systemic racism and discrimination. As land prices skyrocket and climate change threatens our landscape, we are working to protect farmland, support farmers, and chart a new path for the future of farming in Washington State. 

We see farmland conservation at the nexus of many important issues, from rural economic development to local food production and climate change. By working in partnership to protect farmland and prioritizing the needs of local farmers and the community, we are creating a more sustainable and resilient future for our state.

We are a statewide organization, prioritizing farming communities based on a set of conservation criteria. We conduct technical mapping to understand where soil quality is highest, and use factors like development pressure and climate impacts to help us identify the most urgent threats to farmland. We typically protect farms in close proximity to one another in order to strengthen the fabric of the rural communities where we work. Threatened farmland sometimes needs direct intervention to ensure it stays available for future generations of farmers. We use tools in different combinations, depending on the context and needs of each specific project. Each tool ensures the permanent protection of farmland.

Through our Farm to Farmer program, we help farmers find the land opportunities they need to grow their businesses, and help landowners sell or lease their land to keep it in farming. We offer personalized technical assistance to current and aspiring farmers, farming and non-farming landowners, veterans, real estate agents, and organizations looking to expand their incubator or agricultural park programs, which are areas set aside specifically to encourage continued farming operations.

By protecting farmland forever, we are creating access and affordability for a new generation of farmers. By removing development potential from farmland, the purchase price becomes much more affordable — often by as much as 50%. With access to land being the number-one hurdle that new and beginning farmers face, we aim to address this barrier by protecting land and making connections to land opportunities through our Farm to Farmer program.

Accelerating Philanthropy through Women’s Collective Giving. Our 90+ giving circles have invested over $207M in their communities!

Philanos is a network of over 90 giving circles whose 20,000+ members have cumulatively granted $207 million in their local communities. Although these circles vary by the size of their grants, funding areas, structure, and number of members, they function and are challenged similarly. Philanos’ role is to share best practices that help these giving circle affiliates with all aspects of building, running, and growing their organizations and incorporating new practices. 
With over 20,000 women philanthropists in Philanos, they have awarded grants in their communities in support of culture, climate change, food security, poverty alleviation, justice, Black led, gender equality, and racial justice, among other community needs. 

Our educational programming to support this mission includes: 
■	6-8 webinars annually with topics such as:
        + Communicating Impact in a Trust-Based World
        + Funding Women and Girls
        + Succession Planning
■	Virtual affinity group meetings about:
       + Communications in our Comms Club;
       + All things technology in Tech Talks; and
       + Strategies and challenges of leading a giving circle in "A Table for Chairs" exclusively 
          for the President or Chair of a circle. 
This programming is available to an unlimited number of an affiliate’s members, with the exception of “A Table for Chairs”,  

We also offer opportunities to network and connect with other giving circles through our private Affiliate Portal.  It contains: 
     + the Philanos Resource Library, with information on numerous issue areas important to women's giving circles; 
      + a member-to-member forum where women can pose questions to the community (i.e. 
         “Do you pay honoraria to speakers and if so, how much?”); and
      + 5 years of recorded past webinars. 

Every 18 months, Philanos hosts an in-person Conference for women in and supporters of collective giving.  We will gather November 5-7, 2023 in Baltimore, MD to learn from nationally recognized keynote and plenary speakers and in 20 breakout sessions from network leaders and other outside experts.
