The first, and only, FDA cleared over-the-counter insulin calculator for people with Type 1 Diabetes.  And, its completely free!

Drew, the creator of T1D1,  was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in September, 2020 and was 13 years old. After being diagnosed in the hospital, he was feeling completely overwhelmed and unsure how to calculate his insulin doses five times a day (too little insulin and you may cause long term organ damage, too much insulin and you may go into a seizure!). He was looking for an easy-to-use app that had the essentials needed to calculate, track and communicate with his doctors but he couldn't find anything that quite fit what I was looking for. The existing apps were either expensive, had annoying pop-up adds, connected to devices, or just too basic. So, Drew decided to create his own app. He felt it was important to offer a free app accessible to anyone who needed help in managing this disease.

We aim to advance the mental wellbeing of our South Asian community.

In 2021, during their freshman year of college, our founders Ravi Parekh and Aaron Pandian suffered the loss of their close friend and roommate, Farhan, in a tragic murder-suicide where he took the lives of himself and his family. 

Farhan was struggling with a variety of inadequately treated mental illnesses. However, like so many members of the South Asian-American community, his parents simply lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing him the care he needed.

They recognized that, as an immigrant South Asian family, they lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing Farhan the care he needed. The tragedy of Farhan and his family revealed that there are many mental health issues unique to the cultural characteristics of South Asians. Understanding that these environmental factors and structural barriers to effective care created the situation which led to this tragedy, we theorized a youth-led grass-roots advocacy and education initiative that equips South Asian youth and other interested parties with access to tools and resources to understand, process, and empower.

Grass-roots efforts are often inspired by lived experiences. Our passion and drive to bridge the gaps in mental health care for South Asian individuals stem from our lived experiences.

Knowledge is empowering, and part of understanding mental health is to both learn and express empathy for those affected who are unable to receive effective care. To learn not to fear mental illness as a sibling, parent, friend, significant other, or affected individual and employ newly acquired tools that work to connect with the resources they need. 

MHISA embodies these ideals and provides us an outlet to engage those around us with a shared goal: to enable South Asians struggling with mental illness to lead better and healthful lives.

In our AI-infused society, the gap between imagination and “reality” is smaller than it’s ever been — and now it’s time for humankind to graduate from asking if our dreams are possible to asking how we can dream better. This means cultivating deeper self-awareness, more discipline and humility, and a better metaphysics of technology to help us wield these new superpowers. But decades into a period of rapid information scaling, our grasp of consensus reality and executive function have eroded, causing an epistemic crisis. The wicked problems of this century require coordination at unprecedented scale, but our greatest natural resource — attention — has worn even thinner than our topsoil. How do we regenerate it and restore the faculties we need to be good stewards of this new ecology of minds?

Navigating the challenges that come with new information technologies is a group exercise and demands inherently plural approaches. The right response to tools that amplify our biases is to lean in with curiosity and play, not fearI have spent two decades studying and synthesizing  perspectives on intelligence and technology, innovation, and human-technology co-evolution…as well as testing bleeding-edge creative tools in public, helping cultivate systems literacies for navigating transformation, and fostering a massive network of mentors and collaborators with whom I share a devotion to the cultivation of a healthy Biosphere and Technosphere. What makes Luma so effective is its simplicity. There’s no app to download, no logins to remember, no new interface to learn. For students without smartphones, Luma’s nonprofit arm helps close the gap through phone drives, ensuring that no child is left behind. Public advocacy on AI 

- We helped organize the [Not For Private Gain](https://notforprivategain.org/) advocacy coalition, advocating to the Attorneys General of California and Delaware to protect OpenAI’s charitable mission (ensuring artificial general intelligence is safe and benefits all of humanity) from being undermined by the company’s corporate restructuring. Our work helped convince OpenAI to back off its original restructuring proposal and commit to continued nonprofit control, and we continue to advocate for even better outcomes from a safety perspective. 
- We dug into the [corporate filings of xAI](https://lasst.org/2025/08/25/xai-and-public-benefit-corporations-in-ai/), [revealing](https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2025/08/25/elon-musk-xai-dropped-public-benefit-corp-status-while-fighting-openai.html) that despite what it has said to at least one court and the public, it is no longer a public benefit corporation. The revelation shows that AI companies organizing as PBCs (including OpenAI) is not a robust way to ensure safe AI systems.

Developing and filing amicus briefs

- We pulled together a coalition of respected virologists, epidemiologists and public health professionals to file [amicus](https://lasst.org/2024/12/23/lassts-pathogen-research-amicus-brief-project/) [briefs](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pb7vB6yblM7Yj-219tb-g2lkDvWLgggm/view?usp=drive_link) in COVID-origins litigation advocating for outcomes that will deter irresponsibly dangerous research involving pathogens with enhanced pandemic potential.  
- We helped write [the amicus brief Encode filed in the Musk v. Altman litigation](https://encodeai.org/encode-backs-legal-challenge-to-openais-for-profit-switch/), reframing OpenAI’s restructuring as a public interest AI safety issue and catalyzing anti-restructuring public advocacy work. 

Litigation surveillance and research 

- We track what courts are doing on AI and biosafety so we can better advocate in the context of evolving case law (like *Mobley v. Workday*’s holding on deployer liability for the actions of AI agents or *Garcia v. Character Technologies* addressing whether the First Amendment protects chatbot outputs). This helps us find cases where amicus briefs can help influence key judicial decisions or new precedents can be incorporated into impact litigation interventions.
- We’re always doing fact research designed to support legal interventions, including filing public records requests under FOIA and state analogs.

Funding people or projects that aim to improve the long-term future, such as by reducing risks from AI and engineered pandemics.

Understanding how knowledge grows (the primary concern of *epistemology*) is one of the most fundamental questions that humanity has ever asked. Because the growth of knowledge plays a role in every human endeavor–from science to politics to creating artificial intelligence to raising children to entrepreneurship–getting the answer wrong necessarily leads to blind alleys and errors. Fortunately, Karl Popper, David Deutsch, and other thinkers have discovered and elaborated upon the right answer: that knowledge grows via conjecture and criticism.

Such a simple idea (the entire theory of which is called *critical rationalism*) has an enormous number of practical implications for all of the aforementioned fields and any other in which humans can make progress. While the revolutions brought forth by Newton, Darwin, and Einstein were profound and improved mankind's lot in the universe, even they were limited to particular strands of human endeavors. But epistemology is universal for any problem a person or society faces. Therefore, spreading critical rationalism and its implications will dissolve barriers to progress that most people do not even know stand in their way.

This resource caters to all audiences, whether they are new to the topic, looking to explore in more depth, seeking answers to their objections, or hoping to get involved with research or other projects. Your donations will allow us to continue running distillation fellowships, in which a team of remote writers and editors collaborate on expanding and improving our written content.

To answer the “long tail” of uncommon questions, we’re also building an automated distiller. This chatbot searches a database of alignment literature and summarizes the results with citations to the sources. We also plan to redesign and improve the front end, using A/B testing to figure out how to present information in ways that make it easier to take in and share. Some groups have already reached out to us about strategic partnerships, and we aim to develop an API that lets external websites embed our search function. With larger amounts of funding, we may hire software developers to continue working on these projects, and a CEO to direct them.

But today’s data is implicitly biased against women and marginalized groups. It defines yesterday, not tomorrow. That means the ‘rules’ we will live by for years to come are being written to reinforce the way things were.

To correct the bias, women and girls in all their diversity must be heard. We need a seat at the table. By connecting the right people, at the right place at the right time, women can and must be involved in all levels of policymaking.

Since our founding in 1986, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has been the leading organization building the movement to foster evidence-based approaches to psychedelics and the people who use them. We are dedicated to fostering new research directions that prioritize public benefit, supporting international researchers and pilot programs, and ensuring the accessibility and culturally appropriate integration of psychedelics as a tool for individual and community wellness. The cultivation, use, and trade of psychoactive substances — including psychedelics — has been a consistent aspect of human history, but prohibition, criminalization, and militarization — and their inherent oppression — have led to drastic consequences. The ongoing, global War on Drugs has been justified by bad science, racism, and fear for too long: it has led to mass incarceration; erosion of civil liberties; ecological damage; economic waste; and the public health polycrisis of adulteration, poisoning, and overdose. Many of these harmful effects have disproportionately impacted the most historically exploited and oppressed communities. Consequently, we believe societies worldwide have an obligation to account for and repair those harms, to the extent possible.

For psychedelics to be most safely integrated into society, we need to be honest about the implications. MAPS recognizes the importance of a comprehensive understanding of their risks and potential benefits, teaching people how to navigate altered states of consciousness and how policies impact individuals and communities. 

We create cutting-edge education for professionals and the public, provide expert support for the psychedelic and drug policy movement, and convene people who share our vision—all to lay the groundwork and create the guardrails necessary for responsible social transformation. 

As psychedelics become more mainstream and an increasing number of people seek to use them for healing and personal growth, we are more dedicated than ever to making resources available for people and communities to safely and responsibly integrate psychedelics into medical, legal, and spiritual contexts.

Then in his last year of junior high school, he had a math teacher who used a very different approach in class - he used activities, he made it interesting....even fun! That point marked a 180 degree turn in Issifu's life. He began loving the subject, excelling in it, reaching the top of his class across all the subjects, and today he is studying computer engineering at one of the best universities in Ghana.
