To be Kenyan is to participate in a Chama, whether directly, indirectly, once or continuously. Chamas are a grassroots form of savings cooperatives common in Kenya. 

Started in the 70s as a response to inaccessible credit, these groups were formed primarily by women. The women learned that collective savings with friends, neighbours or family multiplied their chances of raising capital. The Chama system, although completely decentralised, has maintained autonomy and democracy in its governance. Decisions are made on a continual basis and each member has a single vote regarding the dispersal of the commonly held resources. The number of registered chamas today stands at approximately 300,000 with a total of $4 billion, this number can actually be doubled to give the actual reality, as many chamas are unregistered and work informally. 

Chamas are a system for the democratic management of community resources, and thus they are a prototypical kind of DAO. DAO's are blockchain native communities which own and govern both environmental and digital common resources. DAOs can be guardians of a community treasury, a water supply, or data around bioregional ecology.

- It can be argued that the Chama operating as an organism, adapting to include culture and compassion is due to the fact that it was women who pioneered its invention.

ChamaDAO RESEARCH PILOT

- The Regen Foundation is piloting on the ground research to understand how DAO governance, and mechanisms from regenerative finance can bolster the legacy and future of Chamas. We believe Chamas have developed a framework for grassroots feminist communities to fund and steward common resources, whether those be collectively held treasuries, or regenerative land management.

# Ecological Institutions

*We are prototyping a framework to expand the legibility of the more-than-human world; from inert resources to living institutions.*

*ts essentially hacking corporate personhood to create “earth native” institutions. We are doing this using an elegant integration of Rights of Nature law, regenerative economics, and blockchain protocols.*

*The idea has resonated with several indigenous nations, and now in collaboraation we are exploring Ecological Institutions where non-humans can possess their own land titles and contracts, license their own data, compensate their guardians, safeguard their biodiversity, pressure their political delegates, and own their own currency.*

### In 2025 we will release the first generation of EI’s to the public. This entails participatory workshopping with IPLC collaborators, covenant design, software development, as well as rigorous documentation and comms.

# Recentering Legitimacy

Centering the validation of information locally. is the fundamental way that stewards, local communities remain in the value creation loop!

However to date, there is no rigorous framework designed to maximize both data integrity and the inclusion of local stewards.

We are building that, and actually blockchains and incentive engineering could be very helpful in the process.

Centering local validation wherever possible is a fundamental way to keep the wind in the sails of grassroots stewardship in order to actually help!

### In 2025 we are publishing the whitepaper and partnering with 6 steward communities in Ecuador, Kenya, Peru, New Zealand and elsewhere.

# Claims Run the World

It’s true. Upstream of making a new biocultural credit, carbon credit, impact NFT, or just grant reporting in general, is a collection of claims about your “Nature-Positive” impacts.

At Regen Network, we are creating an Attestation Engine which underpins a new paradigm in environmentally-aware institutions and infrastructure. Think of it as an oracle. A system which allows real-world events and outcomes to be inputs which drive economics and policy decisions.

We are building the data architecture for a planetary sense organ which leverages distributed consensus and incentive alignment to produce high integrity assertions, used to drive pretty much anything else. The existing climate-finance industry is a dinosaur by comparison.

Whatever nature-positive asset, program, or contract you are wanting to build… they all require a high-integrity Attestation Engine.

### In 2025 we will publish and deploy this Attestation Engine on 10 projects internationally, integrating it in both the creation of ecocredits as well as ecological institutions.
