Everyone Deserves Dignity

Years ago, outside a restaurant, a man stood asking for someone's leftovers. Gray-haired, dirt under his nails, hungry. "I don't want your money," he said. "I'm just hungry." He wasn't asking for charity. He was asking to be fed, like anyone else who's hungry at the end of a long day.

He was turned away. Moments later, when someone came back to find him, he was already gone. Just gone, the way people who are unhoused so often are: overlooked, moved along, forgotten before anyone can make it right. He shouldn't have had to ask twice. He shouldn't have had to ask at all.

We meet our unhoused neighbors across the DMV where they are, with food, care, and respect, before the ask ever has to happen, and long after most people have stopped looking.
