New Futures’ mission is to create educational opportunities for rewarding careers. We are the only regional organization supporting systemically excluded young people as they leverage the opportunities of shorter-term postsecondary credentials to pursue lasting careers and financial stability, with the goal of closing gaps in resources, privilege, and education that perpetuate generational inequity. New Futures provides scholarships, one-on-one academic guidance, and career-specific advising and workshops for young people pursuing community college degrees to advance their education and launch careers in high-demand fields. We respond to the unique needs of young people of color from lower-income, frequently immigrant backgrounds who do not have access to traditional post-secondary support systems (e.g., restrictive scholarships or loans, mentors familiar with the US education system) or the financial freedom to attend a full-time or four-year degree program. All of New Futures’ current Scholars self-identify as people of color; 71% are immigrants or new US residents; and 90% are first-generation college students. Our staff is composed of those who identify as: Bi-Racial (8%), Black (54%), Latina (15%), and white (23%); female (77%) and male (23%). Our highly qualified staff advisors combine extensive professional backgrounds in college persistence with their own invaluable lived experiences to serve Scholars. Since 1999, we have awarded over $5 million in scholarships to more than 800 low-income young adults, totaling more than 400 credentials/degrees earned. With 97% of our alumni employed or pursuing their next degree, we can confidently say we are achieving our mission.
