A Network of Women and Allies Reshaping Affordable Housing

Women’s Affordable Housing Network (WAHN)

The Women’s Affordable Housing Network (WAHN) is a national, women-led nonprofit dedicated to strengthening leadership, advancing equity, and building community across the affordable housing industry. We bring together women and allies across roles, regions, and career stages to ensure the people shaping housing policy, finance, development, and operations reflect the communities they serve.

Affordable housing is not just about buildings—it is about people. Behind every development, policy decision, underwriting model, and operating budget are professionals whose leadership, collaboration, and lived experience directly influence outcomes for residents and communities. WAHN exists to support those professionals, elevate their voices, and strengthen the ecosystem they operate within.

Mission Statement

WAHN shines a light on women in affordable housing as they lead, thrive, and reshape the industry, with allies amplifying our mission every step of the way.

Vision Statement

To create a nationwide, women-led movement that strengthens women across the affordable housing industry to lead, innovate, and inspire lasting change. By bridging the gap between those who develop affordable housing and those who live in it, we strive to transform the industry through education, advocacy, and community building. Our vision is to be the leading national network that sets new standards for equity, fostering a strong alliance of women and allies dedicated to driving systemic change and creating equitable opportunities for all.

The Challenge We Are Addressing

The affordable housing crisis is one of the most complex challenges facing communities today. Solving it requires expertise across finance, policy, development, operations, law, construction, and community engagement. Yet the industry often operates in silos, with limited visibility into career pathways, inconsistent access to leadership opportunities, and underrepresentation of women and diverse voices in decision-making roles.

At the same time, the demand for skilled professionals in affordable housing continues to grow. New developments, preservation efforts, compliance requirements, and policy shifts require a strong, informed, and collaborative workforce. Without intentional investment in people, leadership pipelines weaken—and progress stalls.

WAHN was created to address this gap by investing directly in the individuals and relationships that make housing possible.

What We Do

WAHN operates as a national network with state, regional, and student chapters, creating meaningful local impact while sharing knowledge and best practices nationwide. Our programming is designed to support professionals at every stage—from students and early-career professionals to seasoned leaders shaping national policy and practice.

Our work is guided by four core pillars:

Learn

We provide education, training, and access to industry knowledge through conferences, panels, workshops, certificates, and digital content. Our programs demystify affordable housing, introduce roles across the development lifecycle, and equip professionals with the skills needed to grow and lead.

Connect

WAHN creates intentional spaces for relationship-building through networking events, mentorship programs, peer learning groups, and chapter-based communities. These connections break down silos, spark collaboration, and create trusted networks professionals rely on throughout their careers.

Strengthen

We focus on leadership development, confidence, and capacity-building—recognizing that women are already powerful, and stronger together. WAHN supports individuals as they step into leadership roles, navigate career transitions, and influence organizational and industry-wide change.

Advocate

WAHN amplifies voices and perspectives that are too often left out of decision-making. Through storytelling, education, and engagement, we advocate for inclusive leadership, equitable policies, and industry practices that center both professionals and residents.

Who We Serve

WAHN serves a broad and interdisciplinary community, including:

  • Professionals working in affordable housing development, finance, asset management, and property management
  • Policy experts, attorneys, accountants, architects, engineers, and consultants
  • Public-sector leaders, nonprofit practitioners, and philanthropic partners
  • Students and emerging professionals exploring careers in housing
  • Allies committed to equity, inclusion, and strong leadership

By welcoming women and allies alike, WAHN reflects the collaborative reality of affordable housing and strengthens the industry as a whole.

Students & the Future Workforce

A critical part of WAHN’s work is expanding and diversifying the future affordable housing workforce. Through student chapters, career exploration programs, mentorship, and exposure to real-world practitioners, WAHN introduces students to meaningful careers they may not have otherwise known existed.

These efforts help broaden the talent pool, reduce barriers to entry, and ensure the next generation of housing leaders is prepared, informed, and inspired.

Chapters & Local Impact

WAHN chapters are the heartbeat of our organization. Led by local volunteers, chapters provide programming, networking, and mentorship tailored to their regional housing landscapes—while remaining connected to a national community.

This chapter model allows WAHN to scale impact responsibly: local leaders drive local engagement, while national infrastructure supports consistency, quality, and shared learning across the network.

Why It Matters

When leadership reflects lived experience, decisions are stronger. When professionals are connected, collaboration improves. When knowledge is shared, innovation accelerates.

WAHN strengthens the people behind the housing—because stronger people build stronger systems.

By investing in leadership, relationships, and education, WAHN contributes to long-term solutions that benefit not only professionals, but also residents, families, and communities nationwide.
